Huh?

Marvin Lewis re Chad Johnson, to Mark Curnutte in this morning's Enquirer: "It's unfortunate for Chad that he is being cast in this light because it's not fair.''

Not sure I understand. Who cast the light? Not fair to whom?

Seeme to me Chad has spent the last month saying the team has cast him in that light. Also seems to me that the team has no idea how to handle him. (Not sure any team would have that idea, but we're talking about the team that employs him.)

The rift is between Johnson and Lewis. That's the distinct impression Johnson has left. More likely, it's between Johnson and the Bengals' bank vault. But that is not how the receiver has framed the discussion. So to say it's unfortunate that Chad is being cast in this light, while taking no responsibility yourself, is disingenuous at best.

Lewis has said over the years he wanted less selfishness from his team. Johnson isn't the only target of that comment, but he certainly is the most obvious. Yet when Johnson celebrates a TD by himself, by hopping atop a TV platform and commandeering a camera, his coach's public reaction is to smile and tell Johnson he understands.

You can't make vague references to some "light'' without assuming some of the blame. He is your player.

At some point, there's a decent chance we'll see coach and player at a podium, smiling and saying it was all "blown out of proportion'' and that there never was any real problem. Might as well happen sooner than later. The team isn't trading Chad and, given he's already the fourth-highest paid wideout in the league, it isn't likely to redo his deal a third time.

It falls to Marvin to do what's best for the entire team while also keeping his star wide receiver happy. You don't get what you expect. You get what you put up with. Time for Marvin to change the light.

Couldn't agree more, Paul.

Marvin used to have cajones. Remember how he immediately asserted his authority when he first came to the Bengals? He removed staff, coaches and players who were a detriment to the operation. He was the boss, no question.

What's happened to him?

He's going to lose his entire team if he doesn't stand up to 85 and fix this problem. By the sound of things, the players actions toward 85 says they are begging him to do something.

The biggest problem is that Chad has Bob Sugar as an agent, not Jerry Maguire. I think he's a great player who's gotten a reputation as an attitude problem, and he needs to just swallow the attitude and play the game like he really does love the game.

"Help me help you," I think was the phrase. Get the fans to love you again and all will be well.

Marvin is a puppet, plain and simple. Either that, or the left hand of the organization is not talking to the right hand regarding this whole mess. Either way, he has been 'Bengalized'.

Unfortunately, an NFL head coach is not so much a coach as he is a baby sitter. I think that Carson must sit down with both Marvin and Chad and get things settled down (hopefully he has already). The last thing the Bengals can afford is to have Chad not getting ready for camp, which he will most likely try to holdout for a trade. Both of these guys have respect for Carson, time for him to be a leader. And keep Rosenhaus out of it.

Brad, I'd bet Chad's paycheck he won't hold out... he loves the game too much and really, it's all he has... plus, MB would not be swayed

We're ALL puppets, rank and file.

I have a wife, two kids, a $2,700 a month mortgage, two car payments, HDTV and a pizza habit to feed. That's slightly more important than silly-ass pride because, ya know, pride don't pay the bills and no one but you cares about your pride.

With the rare exceptions, everyone answers to someone, so that makes us ALL puppets.

I am so happy and proud to have Marvin Lewis as the coach of my team. it's about time some coach or some player (see Griffey jr.) to stand up to the media and tell the people the truth. since the season ended all we have heard are rumors and conjecture when it comes to Chad, marvin and the Bengals. It's good to see marvin step up and tell the truth. It is unfair for the media to try and put Chad in the "light" the media in this town has tried to put Chad in. typical Cincinnati media is often the cry and unfortunately, it is a correct assestment of the situation. For Chad, he has learned a valuable leason that many star athletes have learned playing sports in this city. No matter how many friends you have in the media, no matter how many books they wrrite about you. They (the conservitive cincy media) are not your friends and as soon as they can make you the "bad athlete of Cincinnati" they will sell you out faster than the iphone. Great to hear from you Marvin. It's about time someone spoke the truth in this town. marvin wont be anyones "huckleberry" ....thank GOD

Are we in the early stages of a Carl Pickens redux?

Chad once said he views a player's salary as their place as the top player in their respective position.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the restructured contract Chad signed in in 2006 gave Chad $8 million in 2006 and $8 million in 2007. Salaries in 2006 and 2007 included bonuses.

Chad will only make $3.5 million (base) in 2008, but his cap figure is $6 million.

Paul...you are much closer to these guys than I am, I sure hope you are right. It just seems that whenever Rosenhaus is involved, situations get ugly real quick (i.e. TO). How do you see this one playing out?

I agree with Brad to a degree.

However, i dont think Chad will hold out. I think he really enjoys playing with Carson and TJ and i think is starting to realize that. Notice, during the probowl, chad enjoyed every minute of playing on the field with TJ and stuck by his side the whole time.

Having said that, Carson does need to be a bit more of a leader with this team. He is a QB that has the potential to be in the H.O.F. er one of these days and it doesn't quite seem to be his team yet. That is what makes a hall of famer aside from there talent. You know that every Colt, Eagle, and Patriot player came into those franchises knowing whos' team that was in the locker room.
I am as big of a Carson Palmer fan that you will find out there, but he hasn't quite reached that level of Influencial team leader yet.

Did anybody else feel any racial tension in the post from ANON 12:08.
Yeah, it was kind of stupid to write a book about somebody and then turn on them.

Yeah, it was pretty lame that this city called chad a cancer for dancing.

It was pretty lame that this city jumped on his bandwagon when we where winning and then off of it when we where losing.

It was kind of wrong for the media to goes as far as call an enthusiastic talented athelete a cancer to the team when he still put up numbers and produce along with still having the support of his QB that everybody still adores.

However, Chad did take it farther than it needed to go and that was pretty lame of him to say some of the things he said. If this is a race issue, like you say it is. Why make it worse.

Look, I have lived in this town my whole life. Yeah, i am willing to bet that there are still many Old Timer, Back Woods, Redneck, Conservative-Bigits that are making this a race issue. (sadly enough i personally know a few) Seriously dude, Just shut up with it. I know for a fact that there are people that would treat Palmer differently because he is white, and undoubtably many of them can only breed in a city like ours, but.....

If your not going to help the problem then why be a part of it?

I saw this coming a mile off, that Chad, during Super Bowl week, would show up and splash his selfishness all over radio row. Especially after he did the pre-Super Sulk on Mike and Mike a few weeks earlier.
The Bengals should have seen it to, and a meeting between Lewis and Johnson before the Super Bowl and settled it all.
But they didn't because Lewis hasn't talked to Johnson since November, allegedly.
I ask you all this, would your boss get away with being childish and ignoring you? Or would he call you on your antics and solve the situation?
Mr. Daugherty, I wonder if you've tried to talk to Chad since your column that upset him so much and if so, what his reaction was?

I gave up Marvin for dead when Chad did his cameraman thing, got a penalty and Marvin smiled. I knew then Marvin had lost whatever he ever had.
Belichick would've killed Chad with just one "look".

Paul,

You are the best and closest thing to a big city writer we have in a dying business.

Could you PLEASE not use Chad Johnson's self imposed and unfortunate nicknames?
He's WR Chad Johnson.
The number two or three ball catcher on our local NFL team.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

Number two: you could call our Coach Lewis more on his childish blame that his ball catcher is being cast in some sort of false light.
B.S.

I truly believe Coach Lewis is bitter that he didn't have the guts to try harder for the Redskins job.
Now Zorn is on HIS level, and NFL coach of an NFL franchise and he is still stuck in Cincinnati and semi-pro ball.

I cancelled my season seats after 2005 and when a rude little man from the Bengals called to ask if I wanted to renew, after all the arrests, after even Lewis's attitude I told him that "No thank you, I am a fan of PROFESSIONAL football."

Give 'em hell.
You are NOT Jeff Hobson - ugh ... now THAT guy ...

The best case scenario would be-as mentioned-Chad and Marvin to both come out and say that there is no issue and that the Bengals will move forward AS A TEAM to take the appropriate steps to bring the team into contention.

The worst case scenario would be a holdout, etc. with a divided lockeroom, media attention solely on Chad, MB, and ML-etc. It would severely ruin the team.

If we were winning-you wouldn't hear any gripes from Chad. The guy loves to win-I truly believe that. For the record, the fans still love him-and none of us blamed him for the pathetic defense this year. This is really all behind the scenes stuff between the players, Mike, and Marvin. I'd like to see more of the 'Keep Shovelin'", "Do Your Job" attitude...as fans our only job is to show up and cheer for our team-and we've been doing that.

I really don't get you bengal fans. Chad's coming or going has little to do with how the team will perform next year. Did he lose you any games this year? If he goes, your team stands to get some fair compensation (draft picks) to fill gaping holes. Wide receiver is defintely not a weak spot for you. If he stays; you will continue to have one of more dangerous receiver corps in the league, if he goes, the receivers will still be in the top half. Chad is a non-issue performance wise. It just appears that you want him to modify his behavior and are pouting because he is not a quiet professional like Jerry Rice. I can guarantee you that Chad's mouth was no louder than former Steeler Joey Porter. Cowher did not babysit him; the fans embraced him, but when he could no longer perform; he was let go. The point is, successful teams and their fans emphasize the strengths of their players; not the weaknesses.

What the heck are you talking about? Didn't you see Chad on television or hear him on the radio demanding the Bengals trade him? I get it, the media made this story up. It really wasn't Chad speaking to the national networks demanding that he be traded. It was a clone planted by the conservative (with an A ) media conspiring to make Chad look evil.

Annon: 1:47, i can just about bet you are some of the same people who thought the "media" was behind all of the bad press Bob knight recieved over the years for his actions. I bet you are just like Doc who believes no matter what Bob knight does it's the media's fault for not talking about the "good things" he has done over the years? Why can't Chad get that same type of consideration from the media in this town? Has Chad abused the media like Bob knight? has Chad thrown a vase at an elderly lady just trying to do her job? Has Chad ever choked anyone and used the excuse of "just trying to aplly a ""life leason"". And you wonder why people consider the media in this town to be a JOKE. And You wonder why people in this often complain about the media being 99.9% white. it's because of BLANTANT DOUBLE STANDARDS like this. You and Doc both a FULL OF CRAP and this is just example 1,987 of your double standard.
