Tubby

How bad does it have to be in Lexington for Tubby Smith to take the job at Minnesota? Believe what you want -- Smith was given an ultimatum by UK's AD to fire his entire staff, Smith was worn out by the outside demands of the job, Smith knew he'd never please folks down there, the pressure finally cooked him -- it seems obvious that he'd had enough. Again: It's an incredibly difficult job, made harder by unrealistic expectations. That Smith averaged 25 wins a year, won a national title and went to four Final 8s, I think, wasnt good enough. That's sad. Sadder is, Smith's a decent man, in a profession where decency is tough to maintain.

And yet...

All you could think of while watching Kansas thrash the 'Cats last week was the silly disparity in talent. UK fans don't stand for that.

It's hard to see Tubby excelling at Minnesota, no matter how good a coach he is. It's hard to see anyone excelling at Minnesota.

Good luck to UK in hiring its next coach. Of course, they'll love the guy down there. Until he loses a few.

Ten years at Kentucky is an eternity, given the expectations of the job.

He'll do better at Minnesota than you think. Didn't they go to a Final Four a few years back? So, obviously they're able to get players to go there...

Personally, I think it was a great way to go out, on his own terms.

I have never held anything against UK players or coaches and never will. Fans who care more about the basketball team of a school they never stepped foot on than their own dental hygiene; well that speaks for itself.

The ultimate irony will be next March if UK misses the dance as a new coach reloads.
That would be poetic justice; unfortunately the fan base has little familiarity with anything involving poetry.

c'mon robert young, where do you think all those catchy verses scribed on the walls of all those gas station bathrooms came from?

Anonymous at 8:29 PM, Minnesota has been to the tournament twice since 1990 and once since 2000. It's not a good program.

On the same day Tubby hits the road, Sean Miller gets a gigantic extension. I hate to be cynical, but I can't see a coach of Miller's caliber staying at Xavier for another decade. It'll be a huge buyout for whatever university wants him, but someone will pay up to get Sean eventually.

Come on Paul this is the second attack recently on Kentucky fans. "most" Kentucky fans don't expect a final four run every year but they expect to be on the same talent plane as other top notch programs. As was very evident in the UCLA, Memphis, Florida, and Kansas games Kentucky isn't even close. I know you are used to the Huggins era bearcats not being able to get past the 2nd round of the tournament but please stop cracking fans for expecting a winner. As I posted last week this areas sports fans could stand to heighten thier expectations.

Tubby got one national title in 10 years, let's see how well the new guy does.

Unless you are Rupp, you leave on your own term, get fired, or get put on probation and forced out.

That's just the way it is at UK.
Good luck in replacing Tubby: he'll have Minnesota in sweet 16 by 2010.

I'm very good friends with a bunch of UK fans who actually attended the University, and they're all happy to see Tubby go. However, none of them blame Tubby for not recruiting Lofton. Pitino didn't recruit him either, if you recall.

UK had three McD's All American's signed that year in Rondo, Morris, and Crawford, along with another very solid player in Ramel Bradley. Back then, no one would have taken Lofton over any of those four, so to blame Tubby for not recruiting Lofton is revisionist history.

And Doc, Tubby was the coach at one of the pre-eminent basketball schools in the country. They are not satisfied with losing 10+ games in 5 of 8 years and going 9 years without making a final four, and I can't say that I blame them.

Regardless of whether Tubby left or not, next year was going to be a rebuilding year, with Morris leaving, Crawford possibly leaving, and Patrick Patterson and Jai Lucas not sure things to come. UK 07-08 could be very similar to UC 06-07 or UNC 01-02, regardless of who's coaching
