Humbled and grateful on WLW

I don't want to make a big deal about this, so I'll be brief. Most who know me even a little wouldn't describe me as humble. Only now, I am. The SportsTalk gig is one of the best local talk jobs in the country. To be mentioned in the same breath w/people like Jim Scott, Mike McConnell and, yeah, even Cunningham, is an honor. I have no idea how I'll do. Away from print, I'm introverted, introspective and, during most work days, accustomed to dealing only with my laptop and my dog. Having to be "on'' 5 nights a week will be a new experience.

I look forward to it. I hope the show will inform as much as it entertains. I'd like the show to stray occasionally from sports, if only because I stray occasionally from sports. When I told John Kiesewetter for the paper that it isn't about me, I meant it. It's your show. I have opinions, but I won't ignore or belittle yours. Half the time, you're smarter than I am. I'm just the lucky one who gets paid to type and run his mouth. Anyway, thanks for listening. Call often. Let's have some fun.

Jim Scott, Mike McConnell and Bill Cunningham make me want to vomit.

You don't, so in that way, you're unlike them.

I may disagree with most of what you write, but that's what makes talk shows entertaining. Congratulations and good luck

That's good news! You will do a fine job, while maintaing your reputation as one of the country's best columnists and while also maintaining your established credibility.
Best of luck.

Congrats Paul!

I'm sure you will be better than the angry guys (Andy & Tom). WlW sports talk will be worth listening to again.

You're wrong about one thing. Your knowledge of the sport(s) and the people involved is what makes your writing desireable to read. It will also make your show desireable to listen to.

Who knows, I may even call in.

The food at the Drydock, Waterside (on Longboat) was great the other day. Thanks for the tip. Next year we'll get up to Anna Maria.

Somwhat agree with 1143

Have a feeling you lean toward the right, and that goes right along with the overall political theme of 700 WLW.

Collingsworth was about the only host that came close to a indepentent middle of the road thought process.

mcconnell i respect as a broadcaster but not when he talks politics...not on that same page politically...jim scott is a mr rogers...cunningham is (fill in the blank...)...seg has trouble speaking which is a problem i would think for "radio"...i always liked it when you filled in or have been a guest or on a tv panel so ...all will be good ...

Paul, when will you have your first Hooters Girl guest? Do that a few times and you might have a national gig next.

Paul, obviously you're a nice guy, but when some idiot calls up with a ridiculous opinion, WE WANT to hear you blast the guy. Just like Furman, just like Gamble, McCallister, McConnell, Cunningham, Cutler. That is what makes listening fun and dynamic. Don't be afraid to let someone have it!

Paul, if I might offer some advise from a veteran of 25 years of radio broadcasting. When I've heard you in the past, it seems like you are lacking verbal dynamics in your on air presentation. In other words, you tend to be monotone.Tim Sullivan is the same way. Make sure you listen often to your airchecks and make sure you put life into your voice. I think you're going to find out that this radio gig is more challenging than it might appear. Good luck!

Hopefully you will take lots of calls and suffer fools gladly.

Gamble's failing was that he'd cut the caller off after about 10 seconds and
then go into a spiel for about 3 minutes of his own opinion.

He actually went a half an hour the other night without taking one call.

I don't envy you though. I think
you will kick yourself a hundred times for taking this gig.

I can't imagine your intellect intertwined with the rest of the hairbrained Bush ideologues assocaited with WLW, but you're insight and sense of humor will be a great improvement over the blowhards who've populated the 6:15 time slot in the past. Look forward to hearing from you.

Congratulations! I was hoping you'd get the job Mr. Daugherty.

I heard you a few months ago and thought, ya know I think he might be the best option for the new Sports Talk show host.

You may get discouraged at times with any new job and career I assume, but I think you'll do well and bring back some listeners to Sports Talk.

I listen to Furman on 96.5 some, but Gamble just rambled on too much for me. I'll be listening in to ya! Peace and Good Luck

Congratulations Paul. I enjoy reading your comments in the paper, on this blog and your stints on the TV sports shows and on the radio.

As a listener, if I may ask one favor. PLEASE tell us YOUR TRUE opinion on a particular topic you bring up. That may sound obvious, but at times with Furman, and unfortunately now at times with Lance on 1530 HOMER, the host becomes a total slave to the ratings. I know that is how you keep your job - but don't take a position that loyal listeners/readers know is one that is just to get people fired up and filling your phone lines. Don't stoop to that level - be true to your opinions, tell us what you REALLY think.
