Bengals keep Smith

By now, no one should be surprised. Every year, we talk about top-tier NFL free agents. Every year, the Bengals don't sign any of them. For what it's worth, SI.com rated Justin Smith the 18th-best free agent on the market. Three defensive linemen were ranked above him. Four cornerbacks were as well. The Bengals now will pay him a salary equal to the average of the 5 best players at his position.

The point is not to demean Smith. He's a good player. The point is, the Bengals never make the big move needed to take them to the proverbial "next level.'' Ownership is content to do whatever it takes to keep the luxury boxes rented, nothing more. This offseason, Cincinnati's needs couldnt be more obvious. Now, sadly, the club's intentions are equally plain. Re-signing 2 linemen (smith, geathers) that helped the team be the 31st-best defense in the NFL, statistically, is not a sign of progress. It's further indication that ownership is satisfied with being average, so long as average is enough to keep the seats filled.

It's a shame, because this team had a chance to be better than average. It could be still, but not because ownership is especially interested in that.

Paul, as has been proven over and over and over, mediocrity IS enough to keep the seats filled. Because, then, hope springs eternal...

The saddest part is that nobody is asking Mike Brown to go out and spend like George Steinbrenner. The salary cap levels the playing field.

Making the moves you suggest would mean that somebody in the Bengals' front office would have to have some imagination and/or a game plan. Our GM is too busy handling team legal affairs and keeping pee-wee teams off his playing field. Wonder how often Bill Polian deals with that stuff.

I have never felt the Brpwn family was interested in championships. They want to be competitive enough to fill the stadium. Mike Brown worries more about leases and revenue sharing than building a model franchise.

This town is plain stupid. The fact that we support both mediocre franchises is sad. BUT, we also continue to make excuses for them and accept the mediocrity.

The what-ifs, here we go again, Krumrie, Martin, and Palmer's injuries, DOMINATE the sports talk here. So, this team has a chance to be better than average? Nope. This team is barely average.

It's owners play everything right down the middle, overworking their minority hired head coach and playing small ball with the taxpayers and the county government. If you find the closed door, litigational ways of this franchise interesting, come forward. I'll watch Dallas reruns if I want to put up with this stupid family drama.

All the real fans care about is wins. And ultimately, this franchise is 0-40 in this regard. Live big, but live honestly.

I usually agree with a lot of what you write and enjoy your thoughts regularly. However, I think you're off the mark on this one. First, you can't sign a major free agent until they officially declare on March 2nd. While there were top notch D lineman poised to make the jump to free agency when you wrote this rant, most have been tagged by their respective teams in recent days, especially in light of a woefully thin market with which to replace them. So, with Justin Smith being a solid D lineman, the Bengals did well to keep him off the market, because the promise of a comparable or even better replacement through free agency was deemed a major gamble. This thinking worked and the result is they kept a hard working player with very good stats and character (remember character?), and didn't break the bank in doing it. Simply put, your article claimed they haven't done anything yet, but other than protect their own they can't do anything anyway. And why take a chance of losing him, with the possibility of anyone else on the Top 20 list even being available by March 20th being slim to none?

Why are we so concerned about character? Sleaze attracts sleaze. Poetic justice that a bunch of assinine lawyers harbor a bunch of mindless criminals. The only difference between the players and ownership, the players don't have degrees and they get caught, White collar crime v. lower tier crime. They're all rats. Period.

I hope the Buick driving mensa and his PBS plant stealing daughter are enjoying their free ride down here in SW Ohio. But here's the news of the day. Before the lease runs out in 2025, they still will have not won a Super Bowl. For God detests the petty people of Cincinnati, particularly the natives.
