It's almost always about Bob... Bob at practice, Bob at senior day, Bob on ESPN, Bob unplugged, Bob at AK's last show. Look, there's Bob at the Shootout... that's fine, but it would have been finer had he used some of his down time around here to say some constructive things about the place that gave him his start in the big time, that paid him untold millions, including 3.1 to go away... Huggins encouraging fans not to abandon the program, that would have been useful... that would have put him head and shoulders above the president... instead, he's omnipresent, representing solely his own interests...

Completely agree. Huggins could have taken the high road on his way out and tried to exude some class. But class has never been one of his specialties. Apparently, the university owes its whole existence to him - and he owes the university nothing.

Huggins= Pete Rose

He'll come back 2-3 times a year, to get his attention fix. He's the one that puked down the side of his car, not Zimpher.

Paul - most of the time I agree with your takes - but ths kicking on Huggins is getting to be boring... Number 1 - did he call a news confrence to invite the press when he attended all these functions ? Did he guarantee the press would be there by giving them a speacil invitation? Nope - he was probably invited by AK last night. But who wrote the stories - THE PRESS - the same ones who like to nitpick at him just because he shows up to hang out with friends... Got any complaints - call your editor...

As for 11:12am anonymous - I'd like to know how you would react if your boss told you it's time to leave because you run an evil program - and it makes it 100 times harder to find a job - Why I'm sure you would throw hugs and kisses back at them -

And for 12:39pm anonymous -

I think the truth on Huggins lay somewhere between the evil maniac some claim and the greatest coach since John Wooden as others claim. The truth is there was a bit of an image problem with the UC basketball program, from Art Long to Donald Little to the latest grade incident. Those tend to push the cases of the Keith Gregors and the Anthony Bufords out of everyone's mind. Obviously, the ousting of Huggins could/should have been handled better, but maybe it really was time for everyone to move on. If Cincinnati basketball is truly the great program we all claim it to be then it is time to stop accepting all those second round losses in the NCAA because we kept winning Conference USA. Maybe Mick Cronin isn't the guy to get us over the hump, but it was pretty obvious the last several years that Huggins wasn't either.

Doc, sometimes I think you misinterpret fans "worship" of Huggs for their anger at Zimpher for taking him way from us. It's a subtle, but important difference. We're upset because an outsider who knew nothing about UC, Cincy, or basketball came in and upended our apple cart. It's not necessarily some insane loyalty to an individual. He was just the person in charge of the program for 16 years, so it is he we identify with.

seems like some people can't handle the attention others get.

is there some sort of jealousy thing here?

Thats right. enough about BH!!

Now lets try to figure out how Daugherty can can his ego through a regular size door.

Live Big, @$$hole :)

Yes. Will Huggins just leave already? He's a B level coach with an A level ego.

I agree with you Doc! Someone with a serious drinking problem shouldn't be allowed anywhere near gainful employment let alone run a basketball problem at a major University. More often than not, problems like this reveal the true nature of the individual. Obviously Huggins is worthless trash that needed to be pitched to the curb along with his program. He will fail at his new job and I hope you along with many of the rest of us will be there to point fingers and laugh at him when he does. The same goes for all the kids he's coached. They are all garbage and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a major University. We would be better served if people like that just stayed out of our way altogether or were never even born.

Bob looks for garbage and always finds it. Besides that, he knows nothing about basketball and is an awful coach. I am so glad he is gone.

Nancy did the right thing by firing him, and I hope she doesn't stop there. Athletics should always take a secondary if not minor role to the overall mission of the University. I hope she gets rid of the entire athletic department at UC so the intelligent people she has brought in won't have to deal with all those stupid jocks who would be better served doing manual labor than wasting the University's time with a phony scholarship.

I'm sure you agree with me Paul, we won't be happy until Bob is pushing up daisies and the nonsense that is Bearcat athletics is a distant memory.

Universities are for the intelligent, the stupid can stay home or clean my garage!

Bob is quick to point out at every opportunity that "his kids" were not bad, yet it appears that he used that last night as the sole excuse for why he was let go.

...Huggins credited UC for being a world-class institution but said, "You're telling me those 10 players brought this university down? Get a life."....

Bob seems to forget some of his own transgressions.

Huggins got screwed, so I think he can do whatever he wants around here. You people don't like it? Well t.s.
Huggs was the greatest coach that UC will ever have.

Huggins Derangement Syndrome ["HDS"] continues to affect thousands of Cincinnatians.

Symptoms of HDS include denial of reality, a tendency to see things in hues of purple, a propensity for cheap beer, puking on expensive foreign cars, excessive flop sweating, and the complete inability to accept change.

If you know someone with HDS, approach with caution. The world that they live in is not our own. The symptoms of HDS may be treated with medication - like Herpes or Hepatitis B. Sadly, HDS itself is likely never to be eliminated.

Boy, this blog certainly brought out the morons!!!

As I remember Huggins told the fans all along that they should be supporting UC. Also, to support AK and the players.

What would you do if your boss didn't like you and was willing to pay $3 million to get rid of you? If the choice is to take the $ or not take the $ only a world class moron wouldn't take the $.

I wonder what everyone would be saying if after leaving Bob Huggins didn't show up for senior day, the XU game, did not support AK at his last broadcast when he was clearly wanted there.

For those people who don't like Bob Huggins, don't tune him in, don't read the articles and blogs about him. This is really rocket science.

To the guy from XU who clearly won't understand anything I said above, the operative word(s) for the day are: duh duh duh!!!

wow - you Huggins guys really worship him, eh? Angry Ken, if you really think that "Huggs" is the best coach UC will ever have, that's certainly more your "t.s." than ours.

Remember the classic Saturday Night Live skit, with William Shatner addressing the hall full of Star Trek conventioneers? "Get a life"? This hero worship of Bob Huggins is becoming a bit disturbing.

Anyway, I think PD makes a good point in this post.

Glad to see another pro-nancy blogger. Viva conrad. I hope you agree with my above post about dumping athletics. I can't stand jocks! They are all so stupid!

What you notice when you look at the operating results by "sport" at U.C.....is that Basketball operated $1.9 Million in the black (profitable)....while Football lost $1.9 Million ...Women's basketball lost $1.1 Million , and other sports lost $4.8 Million. Net result is that Basketball under Huggins was not only pulling its own weight financially....it was subsidizing every other sports program at U.C. What horrible contributors Huggins and his “thugs” have been to the University, eh?

It's almost always about Doc... Doc in the paper, Doc online, Doc on Sports of all Sorts,
Doc unplugged, Doc on his blog. Look, there's Doc at the Loveland-Mason Shootout... that's fine, but it would have been finer had he used his media presence to say some constructive things about the sports teams and personalities that gave him his start in the big time, that paid him untold thousands... Daugherty writing positive articles, instead of the usual whining and complaining, that would have been useful... that would have put him head and shoulders above the rest... instead, he's omnipresent, representing solely his own interests...

pd, Bob did encourage AK to stay. Bob was proactive in getting Corie Blount to help coach UC. Bob did some positive work behind the scenes for UC hoops this past year. AK links himself to Bob. Now it is time for Bob to go. I will miss AK.

Daugherty has always been negative against U C & Huggins. Face it. He is a big X fan.Read with this in mind in the future. It's obvious.

Russ-

Put down the crack pipe and step away from the computer. Which Daugherty are you talking about? Certainly not the one who writes for the Enquirer. Paul Daugherty stirs things up - it's part of the job description. On any given day, someone is either pleased or pissed about one of his columns. He's written some very nice things about Mick Cronin - does that make him a UC fan?

Paul, I love ya, man, but this time you are off base. I honestly think Huggs showed a lot of class since he was let go (uh, I mean, completely crapped on...)
So, he took some shots at the administration. Who wouldn't. They're just lucky he didn't snap their necks with his bare hands! Really, Paul, UC is where Huggins grew up, served out his adulthood. So, he is having a hard time saying goodbye. Please, cut the man some slack...

at 8:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Paul,

If you want less emphasis on Huggins, why don't you stop writing about him?

Seems to me you have forgotten Bob's insistance that AK stay and coach or Bob's insistance at the Cross-Town on ESPN that he was there to support "his guys" and the program and asserting that AK was doing a better job than he could have done. You conveniently forget that he was invited by his players to appear on senior day. You conveniently ignore that he appeared at Rick's by AK's invitation. You forget that you, yourself sought him out months after his departure for a rare sit down interview.

Go back to journalism school and re-learn objectivity and truth and while you are at it get to know the hat check girl - she can watch your ego for a spell.

I admire what the man did in his tenure at UC. He had to recruit some questionable kids. If you came to play at UC, you were willing to overlook the shortcomings of the University and it's neighborhood to play for a coach who could make you a better player. If you had the academic profile you could go to a better school, with a nicer and safer campus, and still have a good coach.

Certainly some of Bob's skeleton's came out of the closet and now "character counts" on the Clifton campus - unless you are a trustee or the University President - then ethics, morality, and the truth are electives as opposed to core curriculae.

I welcome Cronin but I will miss Huggins and Kennedy. Just like I missed Sparky Anderson and Lou Pinella and Forest Greg and Jack Mckeon. For whatever reasons, those losers weren't good enough for us either.

Cox is not only a tax cheat, but also pleaded guilty to DUI.

See attached link: http://renewhuggins.com/default.asp?id=8&mnu=8

If Bob Huggins had to leave because he had a DUI conviction, shouldn't Cox have to also. Logic dictates that he should.

Also, does UC really need a "tx cheat" as it's chairman. Forget about thugs, let's get rid of the crooks and hypocrites.
