short attention span's guide to everything

Today, we who are Irish recognize you who are not... 1 interesting comment to come from Mike Thomas' interview with Enquirer's Bill Koch: All UC basketball candidates, he said, are still coaching. That would eliminate Prosser, Stallings and Hewitt. And, possibly, keep Mick Cronin in the mix. UC could do worse than Mick, a good coach and a very good recruiter, a hometown guy good with the media... I had a coach tell me thursday that he believes Thomas knows more than what people think about getting a good coach in here... and that hiring head-hunters is not only standard practice now, it's practically mandatory... this coach said, "just because the guy hasnt said much doesnt mean he doesnt know what he's doing.'' We'll see... to this point, Thomas' public perception is killing him... and again, the only way anyone other than a starry-eyed young guy will take this job is if it comes with a 5-year deal, minimum... 7 years would be better... and the word also is, UC doesnt have the money ($1 million base) needed to lure a big name... I'll bet jon kitna sure is glad he left the bengals for the lions. How many QBs does Detroit have now? 28? Interesting to hear Bob Huggins on the radio yesterday, suggesting he might take an NBA assistant's job. Not so fascinating hearing Huggs say how in the NBA, players don't gripe about their minutes. Uh-huh... Memo to the night manager at the BW-3 at Harper's Point: When customers ask you to please put the LSU game on one of your 20 or so TVs, don't argue. Get the remote and do it... people don't go to sports bars yesterday and today to watch 1 or 2 games on 20 TVs... they go because they want to watch every game, because they are betting on every game. Is this hard? By the way, I was 12-4 yesterday, nailing Montana and Wisc-Milwaukee, losing Marquette and Syracuse and those dopes from Seton Hall... tell me, please, that Louis Orr will not be the next UC coach...

Cronin is the perfect choice.

He's a Cincinnati native and UC grad, winner, and great recruiter.

He's also far enough removed from the Huggins saga.

His coaching style probably most resembles Rick Pitino. Not a bad guy to imitate.

You would have to think he's interested.

Prediction: If UC hires Cronin not only do Downey and Herrera stay, but UC makes a run at OJ Mayo and Co. for 2007.

Let's keep our fingers crossed, Cronin is the best one to restore greatness to Cincinnati.

Bringing in Mayo and Walker would be a giant step to bringing instant credibility and success.

The article in today's (the 18th)paper has 3 candidates identified, Mick Cronin, Karl Hobbs and AK.

The paramount concern has to be recruiting, Mick Cronin and Karl Hobbs can do that. They have both recruited MacDonalds All Americans.

The concern about Hobbs is his personal demeanor. Newspaper accounts has him referring to himself in the third person. I hope that's not true, but it needs to be checked out.

The concern about AK is can he recruit MacDonalds All Americans??? There is not much left on the team after graduation (yes UC does graduate players). We need to recruit right away.

Another concern I have about Karl Hobbs, is if he is successful will he stay? If he is successful will he try to be upper mobile like Self was from Tulsa, to Illinois to Kansas? Mick Cronin is an UC alumni and is much more likely to build the program back up again and stay to reap the rewards here. He has a professional demeanor and can communicate well. He gave UNC all they could handle last night and as I was watching him in the closing minute, he stayed very cool under pressure.

Mike Thomas pointed out that only 15% of the recruits for 2006 are available and a lot of those have academic problems. We should try to salvage sometime out of this years recruiting class and push hard for 2007-8.

Based upon everything I know and have heard, Mick Cronin should be our next coach.

Hobbs also brought in guys from diploma mills... an odd choice for such an academically minded president

At the time the interview took place Thomas said all the coaches were in postseason play. Technically the NIT is post season play.

Kevin Stallings would be a complete disaster. In 8 years at Vandy he's NEVER had a winning conference record. His SEC winning percentage isn't even 40%. He's getting eaten alive in that league, no way I want to see him in the Big East.

Cronin would be perfect, which means they won't hire him. If they hire Orr I'll cancel my season tickets and I'm done with UC basketball.

I got the impression that Cronin had some problems with some unruly citizens on his team, a la Huggins. Wouldn't think Nancy would want that...

Regarding Stallings:

Keep in mind that he coaches at Vanderbilt, which doesn't even have an athletic department. His boss is the dude in charge of intramural sports, or something like that. Can't imagine that's terribly conducive to building a winning SEC program.

I really don't care who his boss is, a sub 40% conference winning percentage shouldn't warrant consideration for a job in the best basketball conference in the country. He's produced nothing at Vandy in 8 years, I don't want him anywhere near UC.

Stallings is on my "cancel season tickets" list, along with Keith Dambrot of Akron, Pete Gillen and Louie Orr.

Has anyone heard the rumor Skip Prosser's wife accepted a job this past week at Univ. Hosp....she worked there prior to leaving Cincy

Haven't heard that rumor, and I don't believe it's true. Skip has been telling TV commentators within the last couple weeks he has "no interest" in the UC job.

I think it's more like UC doesn't have interest in him anymore given his price tag and record this season.

Jesus couldn't win games at Vanderbilt.

The way I heard it was that Skip's wife never left her job with AirCare, and that they continued to own a home in Cincinnati.

They own a home in her name, Nancy Prosser on Alpine Terrace in the Grandin area. The Hamilton County auditor however, sends all tax information to another address in Winston-Salem.

We don't hear his name mentioned much anymore about the job, but, you can't gauge anything by that.

Hobbs would be a terrible choice. He has made some questionable recruiting decisions and hasn't really proven much besides the fact that he knows how to schedule easy games.

Does Hobbs have an NCAA sanctions in process? Ohio State's assistant landed a job with Wright State and Wright State ended up with those sanctions following them and resulting in recruiting restictions. The coach resigned saving Wright State the sanctions, but is there any potential problems for UC due to George Washington sanctions?
