huggins

He's Bob Huggins and he is moving. All you ever had to do, to determine where the exiled former UC coach would land, was to find an underachieving Division I program in a big conference, that needed a quick-fix turnaround. It wouldn't be an elite place; Huggins' baggage would scare those schools off. It'd be more of an off-the-beaten path wannabe, that was willing to make the Faustian bargain lots of schools cut in the name of winning. A place like Kansas State.
The Wildcats haven't been to the NCAA tournament in 10 years. Under recently fired coach Jim Wooldridge, their best Big 12 finish in the last six years was tied for 7th. Wooldridge's record was 83-90 overall and a horrible 32-64 in the conference.
Huggins will change that, especially if OJ Mayo and Bill Walker land in Manhattan after next season. Plus, he's already gotten a verbal OK from Jason Bennett, a 7-2 kid from Jacksonville, who was headed for UC until Huggins' departure.
The Wildcats will be better immediately, on the floor. Off it, the guess here is they'll be OK. Wisdom acquired through struggle over the last few years has made Huggins a better person. I still think it was time for him to leave UC when he did, and while it wasn't handled in the best manner, there is plenty of blame to be shared for that, on both sides. Regardless, all the best to Huggins, whose achievements here should be applauded and remembered. I wish him well.

I'm interested to know if there is any truth that UC is paying $25,000 plus 25% of the first year coaching salary to the headhunting firm for signing agreement with any coach??? Nancy didn't need any outside help in firing Bob and the fall out the came with that. Why can't she hire a replacement? She claims to know what type of coach the university needs! What is really sad is the fact the UC is paying both Mike Thomas and a headhunter the do the same job. Talk about wasteful spending! I wish Hug's the best. I also pray that Andy will get the job. If possible, please reply to the question in the paper.

andy is out of here he will definitely get a job though! He will go somewere else an downey and mcgowan will follow him cause he is a great coach.

Thank you Bob, I knew you'd land on your feet. I guess I'm now a Kansas St. fan - I wish I could transfer my degrees. I hope Andy tells U.C. where to stick it and he also gets a prime head coaching job elsewhere.

I guess the Big XII is now the official landing spot for big name coaches who get ousted from programs for behavioral reasons. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Love your columns, Paul.

let's see how long nancy last when UC does not make the ncaa for the next ten years. remember tony yates and the kentucky game. go hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As the last comment indicates, there are still an amazing number of Huggins Kool-Aid drinkers out there. You wish you could transfer your UC degree[s] to Kansas State? That's a pathetic statement and a sad reflection of the value you place on a degree from UC. Looks like the cult of Huggins will be around for a while longer. The Rev. Jim Jones would be proud of this level of dedication to a single man. Time to get on with your lives - as Bob himself has.

Nancy didn't lose me when she fired Huggs-she lost me when she said something to the effect that she "wants UC Alums to say they graduated from UC with their heads held high". Jeez, I was always proud to say I graduated from UC. Guess I have a "tainted" degree now since I graduated in the pre-Nancy era. You think she may have a bit of an ego?

I understand you're a Bob Huggins fan, and you've always wished him well. However, I take umbrage with your satanic analogy. Congratulations to the schools like XU that graduate good kids from high schools like Moeller and St. X. But those kids would graduate from college anyway. XU and the like should not be given extra credit for allowing fortunate kids to graduate. Bob Huggins gets underprivileged young men from less fortunate surroundings and manages to graduate an impressive number of them. Some of them don't make it, and that is reality. But at least he graduated some young boys, that if not for Bob Huggins, might not have even had a chance to attend college. I'm not saying Bob Huggins sets out to do this, but it is a worthy by-product, and more impressive than what XU does. In the very least, Bob Huggins should not be compared to the devil for doing it. Shame on you.

Grow up. It's a University. There's one boss. The NBA gets a free farm system, some player even get an education because they're not all going to be in the NBA. Huggins thought he ran UC, well he didn't and surprize -- it better be more than sports.

at 11:09 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good for you Bob. I just became a K State fan. See you next year in the Big show.

at 11:11 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Huggins has stated time and time and time again he did not run the university that Nancy did and she had every right to fire him so your statement is inaccurate. The way it happened was embarrassing and expensive for UC. Who knows the long term costs or affects(no tourney appearance, loss of ticket sales). Nancy and the BOT screwed up, bottom line. Bob was a great asset to the University and I wish him well and look forward to following him at KState.

The biggest thing that's dissapointing is that the whole reason for UC being in the Big East was the basketball program that Huggins built (if UC was terrible in basketball would they have ever been invited?), but the man couldn't get a game in before being ousted.

Now, Kennedy picked up the program and gave us all something we can be proud of after plenty of UC fans, myself included, said that we wouldn't ever want to associate ourselves with it. And once again a coach's good deeds will be unrewarded. I think its safe to say that UC won't hire Kennedy (if they were going to, they would have done so by now). He'll go off to a big program, as will Downey and McGowan. UC will be left with a new coach, some unexperienced freshman and no recruiting prospects. I'm preparing myself for years of not making the NCAAs OR the NITs, while posting conference records that resemble the pre-Marvin Bengals (2-14 anyone?).

I can understand Zimpher having beef with Huggins and the necessity for a change (I didn't when it happened), but to not hire Kennedy would be ripping out the hearts of the fans for the second time in a year, and in all accounts killing the basketball program that made UC famous (or infamous depending on your views). The ego on her part is revolting.

Academics should always be the priority for any university, but if you can show me that academics can rally a student body, alumni, prospective students and pick up a national audience the way a good sports team can then I'll freely back Zimpher for putting the final nail in the coffin for UC's basketball program.

I want AK as the next Bearcat coach and it should be a no brainer for UC to see that!!
Nancy is wanting a grades first approach to the UC sports programs.Remember the new rules on grades and scholorships,if the grades are not up they will cut them.So in a way that is the 1 bright side.I still believe we UC fans lost THE COACH and it will take a long time to recover!!

at 11:41 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good for Bob Huggins, K-State will be a top ten program. I'll follow them now. However, the Cincinnati basketball has always been King in Cincinnati, and always will be King.

I like some of the names being mentioned, Cronin, Hobbs and Kennedy. My preference is Cronin because of the proven recruitment skills, basketball savvy and best of all he's a UC graduate and will remain with UC for the long run. There is no better job for him and he will work at it hard. Cronin and Hobbs have also been in the recruiting process this year, which AK has not.

I am concerned about a recent name thrown in the mix, i.e. JIM LARRANAGA. I know he has a decent run goin now with George Mason, but he's been around for years in a insignificant conference with medicore results. I hope we don't start looking at the latest coach with a two game winning streak. I don't want to spend more time waiting for a good program again. I'm afraid this JIM LARRANAGA will get us into the Badger/Yates era all over again.

Paul- you are still one of the most negative sports columnists that I've ever read, even though you actually said something kind of nice this time.

at 12:03 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

For all those Huggins fans you may want to face the sober reality that very few programs with openings even interviewed him. He has way too much baggage. The AD's by their silence when they had openings shows what the rest of the country thinks about his antics. People in the Cincinnati area can't seem to understand that their heroes (Huggins and Rose) were flawed and the rest of the nation does not see them in the same kind light that they do. Give it up, folks.

at 12:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree 100% with Paul, and I think we should all be thankful, should AK not be hired, that we have a team to watch. UC #2.

I watched and listened on Tuesday as the ESPN analysts time and again bashed UC for hiring a consultant. It is an embarrassment that the athletic director can't do the job. It is a greater tragedy that the people who make the decisions can't see what Andy has had to overcome to keep these kids playing at such a level. You can't be anything else but a stellar person to get these young men motivated after the rug was pulled out from under them time and again.

Andy has earned the job, clearly. Whether he wants it or not is now in jeopardy due to the same flaw that caused the Huggins depature uproar: Nancy Zimpher's and UC's bad form.

Soon, when people tell me "I didn't know UC had a basketball program," they won't be kidding.

Paul,

Just remember if it were not for successful guys like Huggs, you would be bagging groceries.

at 12:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

First of all, to all the holier-than-thou commenters on here, it's time to put Huggins' "antics" in the past and leave them there. He is a human being that has made mistakes and paid the price with his job. Have everyone who passes judgment on him ever made a mistake before? My guess is yes, you probably have. It is true that a coach needs to set an example and stay out of embarrasing situations, but all of you XU and UK fans need to save the stone-throwing for yourselves. UC would not even be anywhere close to being the program they are now had it not been for Huggins, and now they are blowing it again with the ludicrous way they are handling Andy Kennedy. Remember, this is the same school that preached that they have to have higher standards when their one of their own trustees is knee deep in legal trouble. Nancy and UC are nothing but egomaniacal hypocrites, and they will pay the price with a South Florida-like basketball record. As for Huggins, hopefully he has learned his lesson and will treat this new job like it's gold. I wish him all the luck in the world...and I will be laughing with him when K-State is in the top 10 and UC isn't even in the NIT.

Word out of the UC Athletic office is that he job was offered to AK and he turned it down...Mick will be named coach as soon as the season ends...should be fun tonight!

The only way Nancy leaves UC is if she significantly raises the academic profile of the university, and is hired to do the same elsewhere. Regardless, I'd be very happy with that outcome.

Good choice Hugs. Being from Wichita now living in Cincinnati It is finally a relief to see the Big 12 get an awesome coach(not that they dont have any now). I think that he will put the big 12 back on the map in basket ball and not just football. The big 12 is a tough confrence but doesn't get much respect from other big confrences. I am an ohio stste fan as well as other local schools but to see him go to a college where he is seriously need is a relief. Now the only bad thing is that when I wear my K- State stuff people will look at me differnt here.

Bob Huggins unemployed for 8 months.

OJ Mayo says to reporters that he and Bill Walker may follow Huggins.

Hours later, Huggins is hired.

Did anyone else find this display real funny?

Talk about a great credential to put on your resume - "If you hire me, they will come."

Perfect choice for Huggs. He is in a power conference where expectations are pretty low right now. Manhattanites will love Huggs (even with all his purported flaws).

at 1:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good luck Bob but I am not going to root for K-State before UC. Andy or Mick will be the head coach and will restore the bearcat pride. It just going to take some time. I wonder if Mick will bring any recruits that he is recruiting with him or if they are Big East type players.

at 1:09 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard that OJ and Bill have said that they are not to happy about K-state and that they will keep there options open. UC is still in the mix depending on the coach. Andy has a better shot at them then Mick.

I'm a Kansas City resident and a UC alum. Thanks Nancy for the opportunity to get a great coach at a Kansas school. As of today, I am a K-State fan and will be laughing all the way to the NCAA final four bank for years to come while UC's basketball team hopes to cobble a few wins together in the Big East conference.

at 1:26 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't wait to hear how Satan Zimpher explains the coching situation that will take place in the offseason. I know she's a bright person and all, but basketball is a business, and she obviously isn't a businesswoman. I'm a graduate of UC and proud of it, but to all those in my generation, welcome back to the Tony Yates era.

Thanks Nancy. Oh, and what was the percentage of blacks that graduated from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee when you were chancellor, 9%. Boy, that's impressive.

at 1:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Congrats to Coach Huggins. Nancy has had it wrong since the day she took the job. Bob Goin ruined the athletic department but he did build a new facility. Good job Bob you should have been a construction worker. Prior to Nancy, the football program was in bowl games and we all know about the basketball team. Bob got out just in time...Did you leave the program in better shape than it was when you got here??? Well enough about that. I love Huggs and I wish Coach Kennedy the best! Atleast better than UC and pompas Nancy!

at 1:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you are implying that Huggins needs OJ Mayo and Bill Walker to be successful at K-State, then you certainly have no confidence in Huggins' coaching ability or K-State's administration's decisions. I think Huggins did OK at UC when he didn't have the best talent in the country. Huggins is successful because of the relationships be builds with his kids. And I can tell you as a coach, that kids that respect you and want to play for you, will play hard. He will have a great impact on whatever kids he recruits to Manhattan. So, I would drop your conspiracy theory and give Huggins the respect he deserves.

UC is a big time program and should command a big time coach. It's telling that we only have these three or four canidates with very thin resumes.Kennedy is my choice and Hobbs is on a lot of AD radars but Cronin at this point in his career does not have the experince.

at 2:05 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice balanced commentary Mr. Daughtety. Thanks to President Zimpher for doing the right thing and reining in the thug basketball program at UC. There are some amazing spots of greatness at UC, the basketball program and the "win at all cost" mentality was not one of them. It was disconcerting to see the reuptation of this fine university constantly sullied by the antics of Huggins and his minions.

--signed: UC alumnus who is glad the university and its president did not let UC basketball run the place into the ground.

at 2:07 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cronin doesn't have the expierence but Kennedy does? Have you been drinking?

Cronin's resume is better than Kennedy's by far.

at 2:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree, Cronin's resume is the best of all of the candidates being presented including Kennedy's. Cronin was the assistant for Huggins long before Kennedy even got on the scene. He recruited Forston, Johnson, Satterfield and Kenyon. Better recruits than Kennedy was involved with. Cronin has gotten into 2 NCAA tourements and Kennedy on NIT. Mick Cronin has been on the recruiting trail. I think Kennedy should have been whether he had to or not. Huggins didn't have to, but he stayed involved and K-State will benefit as a result.

Best of luck to Bob Huggins, let's hope we can get Mick Cronin here. Mick can bring our program back to where it belongs again.

As a 1971 UC grad now living in Georgia, Lady Fishnet (Zimpher) has brought back all the memories of the mid/late 60s, 70, and 80s where we prayed for a bid to the NIT. All the best to Huggins and Kennedy. I know they'll both do well elsewhere. Huggins had his personal problems and paid for them. UC fans are paying the price for Zimpher's ego. Did she choose to attend OSU because of its academics or its national reputation? How is it that someone who leads one of the nation's top "party schools" such as Wisconsin-Milwaukee can come to UC and say with a straight face that she'll clean up the program? Good luck Huggins and Kennedy. Also good luck to Fishnet. I hope she'll get offered the president's job at Ohio State so she can ruin their athletics, too.

UC doesn't deserve Andy! A class guy.

Re: Nancy
Female University Presidents are a hot commodity. Five years max and she's gone whether or not she's successful

at 2:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

No offense to UC grads, but honestly UC was never a top rated school by any standards. For the most part the people in Cincinnati who cannot afford to go away to college or do not have the grades end up attending. So this notion that Huggs somehow was ruining the reputation is absurd. I believe US News has always ranked it as a third tier school. It was what it was, a third tier school, in an awful part of town, with one heck of a college basketball program. Nancy expects the new coach to be going head to head with Duke and UNC for blue chip straight A McDonald's All American's. It is just not going to happen. Huggins worked with what he had to secure the best talent and developed a bond with his players. That is the only way an institution like UC can compete. I really feel sad for the next coach, while Huggs is in the NCAA tourney, the new UC coach will see getting into the Big East tournament a victory.

Dear '75 and '96.

I am also proud of my alma mater (did I say I wasn't???). I am a graduate of one of UC's nationally recognized and ranked programs and am quite proud of that. I and many others were frequently embarassed by the UC basketball program. Huggins' out of control basketball program frequently brought shame and humiliation to the university in addition to winning some basketball games. Thank you president Zimpher for having the courage and integrity to take on this situation for the betterment of UC. Another thing, it's interesting that all of the Huggins supporters never seem to have a clue in the clumsieness of Huggins actions that actually brought this whole mess to a head. Huggins instigated it by issuing an ultimatum. Did he actually think he was more important than the president of the university? Mr. Daughtery wrote at length about this situation and of course mentioned in the article at the top of this page. Huggins is not the innoncent that his supporters want to portray him as. And once again. Good riddance.

at 2:47 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

re: "No offense to UC grads, but honestly UC was never a top rated school by any standards."

No offense to you, but your information is wrong. There are nationally ranked schools at UC that draw students from all over the world. Yes, there is also rampant mediocrity. That is part of the process that Zimpher is addressing. She wants to lift the standards, but all the Huggins supporters don't seem to be interested in UC becoming a better more prestigious university. Great Job Nancy!

at 2:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

How was Huggins supposed to recruit without a firm contract?? He was forced to give an ultimatum.

Mr. Class of 82, be ready for your phone to be ringing off the hook for donations, as most of the UCAT members are no longer going to be affiliated with this national mess. Even the ESPN announcers acknowledged what a joke the athletic department currently is.

"No offense to you, but your information is wrong. There are nationally ranked schools at UC that draw students from all over the world."

Like what, pick up the last copy of USNews that independently rates all colleges and UC was at the bottom of the pack. I am sure they have a some touch notch programs here and there as all universities do. Lets be honest, the quality of academics will not get any better now that he is gone. Just as they didnt get any worse when he was there.

Bob Huggins belongs in the Big 12.
Here's why:

Bob Knight/Texas Tech - Indiana ran him out after he challenged authority of IU President Brand.

Eddie Sutton,Sr./OK State - UK fiasco plus serious drinking problem resulting in DUI.

Quinn Snyder/Missouri - Player Ricky Clemons convicted of domestic violence. Snyder fired.

Kelvin Sampson/Oklahoma - Under NCAA investigation.

Larry Eustachy/Iowa State - Drinking/womanizing issues. Eustachy fired.

Baylor - Baylor player shot ex-teammate Dennehy to death. Player convicted of murder.

So what do we have here in the ole Big 12? Coaches with DUIs, programs under NCAA investigation, violent crimes committed by players, womanizing coaches who cheat on their wives, etc. etc. etc.

The Big 12 conference is a haven for degenerates....therefore a perfect marriage for Chuggins!
Hire Andy Kennedy, a God-fearing family man and let's bury the memory of Bob Huggins once & for all! End of line.

at 3:16 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Big deal he got a DUI. Didn't the President of the US get one back in 1976. I would like to meet the man who has never gotten behind the wheel after 3 beers. Huggs will be in the final four before UC ever makes it back to the big dance....but I bet that graduation rate will be good..lol...too bad noone will care about the graduation rate of a 6-23 team.

Easy there, UC fans. Want to run down the UC vs. Miami DUI scorecard?

MIAMI
Asst. football coach

UC
Head Coach Bob Huggins
Assoc. AD Bruce Ivory
Asst. Coach Keith LeGree (twice)
UC Player Ryan Patzwald

...and that's not even counting the multiple felonies committed by various UC players under Bob Thuggins. Don't bring up other programs until your own house is in order!

OK - so we have this sports VS acedemics thing going here. So, for all of you "proud" graduates, how is it that you could stand by and let the wicked witch of midwest slam your degree? Why is it that we cannot have a great school and great athletics? So in my opinion, the scholars here are spineless. That woman basicly said that until she arrived your degree was a joke! So how is it that you just respect her so much? I have to say that I was very excited about what her plans were for the acedemics. So why is it that she could not lay out the parameters and give Huggs a time period to conform and if he did not then he is out? For those of you who were spending time at the engineering olympics and not the basketball games, Huggs did give an ultimatum: I cannot recuit without a contract. Follow me here - as an athlete, you want the person that recruited you to be there for your career so you know where you stand and what to expect. In my opinion, it was not firing Huggs that lost me. It was the degradation of my degree, the lack of an apology for how poorly the situation was handled and now the eliteist attitude that has been on display all year. You can say all you want about the acedemics but if you think that Huggs and his basketball program had nothing to do with rebuilding that campus you are a moron!

Three beers, indeed. Did you see the police video on TV. Nancy Zimpher did not get the DUI, so stop blaming her already. BH embarrassed UC and the town. Also, boos to the few who are taking potshots at XU and UK. For myself, I tip my hat to coach Huggins for the great basketball program he developed, wish a great coach well at Kansas State, and hope he takes care of his health. Instead of venting, let's offer him our congratulations, encouragement, and a small prayer.

I am a proud (pre-Nancy) UC grad. I have been to Manhattan (The Little Apple) many times - nice college town, big dam and lake, scenic flint hills region. I am still miffed about how the whole Huggins situation has been handled. I did write to the UCAA expressing my displeasure about the consultant hiring. Has Nancy done anything other than spend money since she arrived? How much money has she personally brought into the university? KSU is getting a good one. I would like to see either Andy or Mick get the job. I also like the jobs assistant coaches Martin and Blount have done but doubt they would stay on if Mick got the job -he would most likely want to bring in his own staff.

How many people here actually graduated from UC? My guess - not many.

UC Basketball is not the NBA, even though this town treats it like it is. If you want an NBA team, build an arena and lure one to town.

I hear the Trailblazers will be on the move....

By Bob, good luck, thanks for all your hard work. Also, thank you Nancy, you did the right thing. Courage and integrity at the top will go a long way towards building a better UC.

to the "she 'dissed our degrees" crowd...if the lot of the university increases, so does, ultimately, your degree. Only a fool and an idiot would be offended that someone wants to improve standards at an educational institution. Sounds like some improvements are long over due judging from comments by some UC graduates defending the status quo of mediocrity.

I love this "catitude" from the Huggsies. Did any of you actually attend UC? You don't seem to care a thing about the institution, just whether you have a somewhat decent basketball team (which is all UC ever really was under Huggins). That really says a lot about the university now, doesn't it?

Too bad XU doesn't have it's own web site, maybe you ought to group together and start one, but I'm sure no one would want to go there if you did.

For the elitist crowd from XU Cincinnati is one of the largest universities in the country and we graduate severalfold more alumni than you each year. It seems to me rather than highlight whatever accomplishments XU contributes to the community, that the XU bloggers would rather take pot shots at the UC graduates.

It is my hope that you hire our elitist president so she can recreate for XU the same type of harmonious atomsphere there that she has done here at UC.

Her representation of our univesity, alumni, athletes and students before she got here is not accurate and not appreciated.

If your university has been blessed with a squeaky clean program, wait a while, sooner or later something bad will happen to your university too.

Part of going to a well rounded university like UC is the athletic program and all the excitment it generates. It appears that a part of the XU problem is they have no understanding or appreciation for what going to a large diverse instituion means other than when they experience it when they go to a couple of our events.

I'm sure we at UC are capable of resolving our own problems. Part of the solution will be to get a new president capable of governing the institution without creating havoc. She should be our best salesperson, unfortunately the Board of Trustees hired the wrong person. I hope that is a mistake they will rectify.

We need a reality check on colleges and universities. First, you can not compare engineering schools with non-engineering schools - it's apples and oranges. UC has nationally ranked undergrad and grad schools in the sciences/med, engineering, etc. Too many UC grads have gone on to do great things in these fields so to diss the University is laughable. What is/are Nancy's degree(s) in (history, english, education)? I don't know, someone tell me - but for her to talk about programs about which she knows NOTHING is remarkable. For the Dukie, I guess he did not see the Outside the Lines show on ESPN a couple of years ago that indicated Duke basketball players took courses any other self-respecting undergraduate would not - and what is their graduation rate over the last 5 years with everyone leaving early? I live in Tennessee now and the UT football and basketball players are being arrested pretty regularly here. Open your eyes people.

ps Coaches do not "graduate" their charges, these student- athletes have to study and earn their degrees.

I am a UC Engineering Grad. Not overly proud of it, but not embarrassed either. I always was able to take pride in March when UC was in the Tourney at least.

Admit it or not, UC is in the GHETTO. Ever been to the campus of Duke, UNC, Notre Dame, heck UNCC for that matter? (the list goes on and on) Why in the world would an All-American choose to play basketball at UC when so many other colleges offer a more respected Diploma and a WAY better (and safer) campus? Simple, Bob Huggins.

The millions of dollars the basketball program brought to the University to help Nancy's dream of turning UC into Princeton, has already begun to dwindle. It would take a major coach to be able to bring in the kind of money to the university that Huggins did, and a coach like that would not choose UC in the state the program is in.

UC will end up with a good coach, like an AK or Cronin, but not a great one. Nancy's inability to handle the Huggins situation better, has hurt the entire University for a long time to come.

Conrad, so well said. What amazes me is that Huggins supporters act as if some "golden age" has passed. What was Huggins? He was an above average coach in a very mediocre Conference USA. Where are all the titles of the Huggins Glory Days? Are you actually that proud of the Conference USA titles? What was so great about it? The annual bowing out of the tournament in the first or second round? Greatness that. Instead of seizing the wonderful opportunity given to UC to elevate not only its image, but quite possible move the basketball program to the next level, and to do it with a modicum of class, the Huggins crowd demands for the maintenance of slightly above average in both their beloved basketball program and their university. A really sad state of affairs to someone looking in from the outside. We're average! And we love it! And to those knocking UC's president: have you actually looked at the statistics on what she has done to UC? In a few short years she has done amazing thing to raise UC's rankings, reputation, and research dollars. The trustees must love her.

TO: Anonymous person who posted @ 4:32 PM Today.

Universities are not "blessed" with "squeaky clean programs." Xavier [and Miami] run clean programs and graduate their players because neither university is willing to settle for anything less. Xavier's sterling reputation will never be tarnished because XU would never hire someone like Bob Huggins as coach. The Huggins with 15 years of baggage, that is.

Now, let's talk about UC's less-than-stellar national reputation. UC players James White & Jihad Muhammed are not playing in that little NIT game over in Clifton tonight. Why? Well, they've been declared academically ineligible by the NCAA. What a shocker!

As for XU fan websites, go to:

You might learn something. Then again, probably not. We use a lot of big words over on that website.

If Clifton has degraded somewhat over the years, blame the mayor or our permissive democratic government that brought this sense of entitlement and welfare to our society for the last 30 - 40 years, blame the liberals, blame our druggie culture - but do not blame UC for the city's ills.

No one's blaming UC for the fact that it's surrounded by the ghetto neighborhoods of Corryville and Over-the-Rhine. Clifton was one of Cincinnati's first suburbs - the Indian Hill of its time. But that was a loooonnnnnggg time ago. The fact is that shootings, rapes, and robberies are not uncommon on - and especially nearby - the UC campus. Let's hope the city of Cincinnati gets its act together before it's too late. [See Detroit, MI]. Oh, and HIRE ANDY!

Huggins took chances on kids. Some of his recruits were kids who were heading for a life of drug-dealing and gang-running, but Huggins thought he could turn them around. Teach them the work ethic and responsibility to play collegiate sports and hope it equates to post-graduation. Turn that kid into a basketball player who makes 6 figures playing basketball in Greece, or more in the NBA. Give kids a second chance, an attempt at a future.

He did that exact thing many times, and his old players attest to that exact thing. Sometimes, the kids squandered the chance, wasted their talents.

But to me, giving a single 17 yr old kid that chance, and seeing even *ONE* succeed, would be worth all of the media and blog ridicule that people like you dish out so freely.

ATTN. Liberal poster -

Regurgitating DNC talking points does not constitute coherent thought. George W. Bush is not responsible when crackhead "A" decides to shoot crackhead "B". Liberals like you do not understand the concept of personal responsibility.

And throwing money at a problem, i.e., schools, doesn't solve anything. The Washington D.C. school system spends around $10,000/student and only manages to achieve a 50% graduation rate. Sorry to hit you with stubborn things like facts.

As for UC, I predict Andy Kennedy is never even offered the job. Feel like thanking your buddy Huggins now, AK?

at 6:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've read everyone of these arguments. The only consistent theme I gather is that most people are really passionate about this city, the university, and college basketball. Congratulations. You care.

I find it hard to fault Nancy Zimpher for wanting to up the standards at the University, even if it will never be a "Duke" or a "Harvard". In many ways, the US News Rankings are to University Presidents like the AP Rankings are to College Basketball coaches. Bob Huggins job was to produce a top-25 basketball program. Likewise, Nancy Zimpher's job is to turn UC into one of the top urban/public institutions in the country.

And, according to recent statistics, she is having success.

I admit, I have doubts as to whether a head college basketball coach really influences the university's rankings.

Like her or not, however, you have to admit that Nancy believes in what she is doing and is not afraid to stand up for that belief. For that, I respect her.

I take issue with those who say UC will is not/will never be a top institution. That is a terrible attitude. Things can change: UC is improving and will continue to improve.

Huggins will do very well at Kansas State. If Mick is our guy (and I think he should be), our program will be in good hands as well.

To the 5:29 poster.

I'm sure there's nothing on your website worth reading, thanks for the invite though.

As to your sycophanting of Nancy's virtues, wouldn't you think that a president that made such a big deal about academics would emphasize that the players had to attend class. That is not her fault alone, AK should have watching the store very closely. He is inexperienced in running a big program, but Nancy certainly was clear on what she didn't like. I for one hope he is not selected for a variety of reasons, but most of all because there are better candidates.

UC will do just fine in the future.

As to your extolling Nancy's rise in academic standards, she took us from about 175 to 125. Big deal.

She took our basketball program from top ten to top fifty and next year top 100.

I'm sure you can't identify at XU, but we take great pride in our basketball program. We had about 15 games televised nationally this year. It's been that way since Huggins got established.

There is an advantage to being televised nationally and getting good exposure for the team. XU gets on once a year, when they play UC. Our university is highlighted at half time or before every game.

at 8:33 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

TO: 8:03 PM poster

It's rather pathetic - and telling - that the best you can do is "UC plays games on national TV." It just means that UC's losing ways were exposed to a larger audience this past season. And what potential recruit wouldn't want to get in on all that losing?

You can't brag about the consecutive trips to the NCAA tourney any longer, since UC ended up in the NIT this year. Nice showing last night, by the way. How did White & Muhammed do in the last game of their basketball careers? As UC sinks towards the bottom of the Big East, keep watching for them on TV - channel 19, that is. You'll have Anthony Buford's inane commentary to look forward to, if nothing else.

QUESTION: If UC fans like you had so much "pride" this past season, why is it that Xavier games @ Cintas Center averaged more fans per game than Bearcat games at 5/3 Arena - when 5/3 seats 3,000 more fans than Cintas?

ANSWER: Because there are many UC "fans" who are really only fans of Bob Huggins. The lousy attendance numbers at 5/3 Arena, along with the numerous anti-Zimpher posts on this site, make that fact abundantly clear. Since you posted at 8:03 PM last night, you obviously didn't feel enough "pride" in your own program to show up for UC's final home game this season. You could learn something from Xavier fans if you weren't so damn obtuse. We support the program no matter who's coaching the team - unlike Huggins Kool-Aid drinkers like you.

Fix the problems at UC before taking shots at Xavier. And make sure you're watching next season as we take apart your Bearcats for our 8th win out of the last 11 Crosstown Shootouts.

This is too easy. Next!

Lets all be honest with ourselves. When we are talking sports and referring to Miami, we are talking about the real Miami in Florida. Miami Oxford doesn't make the cut. The sports there are second rate. Do they even still have a basketball program?

Why is again the X fan is on this blog?

Could in be:
Jealously?
Nothing worthwhile going on at XU?
Depression (it must really suck to be in a third rate conference a 1/2 step up from the Patroit or Colonial conference)?
You like to kick a program when it is down? (remember 21-13) is a bad season for us?
Can't remember the xavier web site address?

Anyway best wishes to Huggins, and AK.

More important, UC just made an excellent selection for its new coach. We'll be back in the NCAA tournament in 3 years as Mick works his magic and probably stay there the next 30 years.

The admin at UC should be the one's under fire - not the coaches (all 3), players or fans. I'm glad Mick's returning and I'll re-up my season tix even though I know it will be a tough season in 06-07. I will root for Andy and will not be surprised when Ole Miss wins the SEC. I will watch Huggs re-build KState and win. However, I can no longer give donations to a university and athletic department that has mishandled the situation from day one. And without Men's BB bringing in the top revenues, how will the lesser sports and some of the ladies teams survive?

The problem with X fans is great seeded insecurity. Remember X is predominantly a liberal arts school, i.e. artsy, fartsy.

They don't really prepare people for jobs in medicine, law, business or engineering, more touchy feeley stuff. Important, but not significant.

Compound that with the fact that the professors are Jesuit preists and all that entails (if you know what I mean), it's no wonder that they can't stay on their own blog site.

They have a deep seeded desire to be better than someone, so they critize something they can never expect to understand or achieve.

Huggins (and UC) respresents a prototype of this standard they can never hope to achieve.

I myself welcome the X bloggers. The desperation and extreme neediness of their bloggers helps bring the revelative insignifantiness of the UC past problem in perspective. Remember it could be much worse, we could be like them.

The Cronin selection will help heal past wounds and the upward direction the program will take will make us all proud again.

Hey 3:44 PM poster-

Some Xavier fans actually live in the greater Cincinnati area along with UC fans like you.
Some of us read Paul Daugherty's column/blog. Some of us even have an opinion about Bob Huggins.

Jealous you say? Of what - your NIT appearance?
Depressed? Why would we be? XU won the A-10 championship and made the NCAA tourney.

Yes, the A-10 has had a couple of down years. It happens. Two years ago, the A-10 had four teams in the NCAA tourney; this year it had two. The A-10 is a multiple bid conference - which you'd know if you knew anything about college basketball.

There's more than one college basketball team in this town and UC fans like you can't accept that fact. For the rest of the UC fans, good luck next season - except for the Shootout, of course. Mick Cronin is the real deal - a great hire, a GCL product, and most importantly, a good man.

What are your comments about Huggins? - this blog's title. At least he always got by the first round. You guys were "one & done". You wouldn't have even gotten in if you didn't win the tournament against a bunch of has been, medicore teams in an inferior conference. You're lucky you won or there would have been only one team this year. X wasn't even worthy of discussion except for the tournament win.

GW was your best and they didn't really play anyone good.

Let me know if you schedule anyone good besides UC. Ole Miss & Kansas State will avoid you. It will bring the strength of schedule numbers down and hurt them getting into the NCAA.

Hope to see you on the crosstown shootout blog, at least that one will be remotely about X.

at 11:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Always got by the first round? Didn't he lose to Gonzaga in the first round 2 years ago in the first round? You know, in all his seasons at UC, his teams never beat a team seeded higher than his in the NCAA tourney....NEVER. I'm not going to deny that the man is a great defensive coach. You guys got a local product who has been a consistently good recruiter who will make UC proud. But some of you don't care because you are so stuck on Huggins. That's ridiculous. If you are a true UC fan, you don't now switch allegiances to KSU.
And I take high offense to the bashing of Xavier degrees. I received a degree in Business Management from there, and it is considered one of the top business schools in the Midwest. I am proud to say I went there. I think you UC grads should be proud of your degrees as well. It's a college degree!!!! That's quite an accomplishment, no matter where it is from. Stop all this BS school bashing. Grow up guys

Just can't figure the love for Huggins. He was not a winner, at least not in March. No Sweet Sixteen visits in ten years would get most coaches at "big time" programs fired. Instead, his multiple DWI record and king kong attitude landed him on the outside of the game for a year, allbeit with a fat check, and now in the pit of the hoops universe in Manhattan, Kansas.

Ain't no way Mayo and Walker will play for him in purpleville, more likely they will stay right here in Cincy and play for Mick and the Cats.

I am glad that Mick is at UC and not Kennedy. Just because you can be a babysitter for a year does not mean you can be a long term head coach. Ole Miss will either be on probation or in the market for a new head coach in less than years, guaranteed.

at 2:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Huggs is all about loyalty, committment, hard work and winning, and a great work ethic.

Not the greatest coach for the "polite crowd," but he was Cincinnati basketball for 16 years.

He will establish a new top ten program at K-state. Make no mistake about it, he will be a hall of fame coach, he is already a sports coaching legend.

There's only a handful of coaches who brought their team to the NCAA year after year after year after year.

He deserved so much better from UC, but it wasn't really UC, just an unfortunate power hunger, out of control president who could not/would not let the man do his job.

We have a weak ineffective Board of Trustees who turned out to be a bunch of weak-kneed ungrateful bookburners who let this all happen. I hope they all get booed when introduced at the UC graduation this year, such they decide to show up and be introduced.

I can understand fans of teams that Huggins played or would play are fearful of him and wanted him to be gone and applaud the decision to force him out. It seems a few have found it necessary to log on this site on what's meant to be a farewell tribute to the man's accomplishments.

at 3:10 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're right, a couple of times UC didn't get past the first round, but we were always, always in the hunt. Huggins won 20 games for us in the NCAA alone.

I won't dispute your claim that we never beat anyone higher rated than us, I just don't know. For the XU blogger with the business degree, I do note that XU will never have that problem, when you guys do get in, there is little likeihood that you will be rated higher than anyone.

Now, let's talk caliber of coaches. We had Huggins who didn't want to leave and was a huge success by any reasonable measure. XU has had a series of coaches with a modicum of success in the small pond of the Altantic 10. I forgot which league you were with before, I didn't really don't care, but it wasn't probably another insignificant league.

Anyway, Gillen goes to Virginia and loses. Prosser goes to Wake Forest and wins 3-4 games in the league this year. The program seems to be declining. Matta goes to Ohio State, has a really good year, but his team ends up on probation. I'm sure I'm going to hear that none of this was any of their faults, but I can hardly wait to hear your justification. You write some of the best fiction since C. S. Lewis (Alice in Wonderland in case they didn't cover it at XU).

at 6:34 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice attempt at a literary reference, but your UC education has left you a little short. It was Lewis Carroll, not C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Alice in Wonderland stories.

Re: big ponds vs. small ponds
Next season you're going to wish UC was back in small pond C-USA with Memphis. As long as John Calipari stays at Memphis, they will be in the NCAAs every year. It's very possible they'll be in the Final Four this year. UC will always be a little fish in the big pond of the Big East. In other words, the Bearcats are just bait for the big fish.

Congratulations to Dr. Nancy Zimpher and the UC Board of Trustees, headed by Xavier alumnus Phil Cox, for standing up to Huggins and doing the right thing. Even head basketball coaches have bosses. Zimpher's going to be your university president for a while. So, for the last time, get over it Huggins apologists.

The fact you picked up on the C S Lewis vs Lewis Carroll goes to make the point about Xavier being an "artsy fartsy" school. By the way that reference was put in so you could prove the point. Thanks for obligating.

About the small pond analogy, thanks to Huggins and his recruits being gone, we probably will be the small fish in the big pond next year, but under Mick's leadership the fish will grow and we'll be the big fish in the big pond once again.

Enjoy your swim in the puddle.

To all you Bob Huggins lovers out there. Ummm, your former coach was an embarrassment to the school! He got pulled over for DUI. His recruiting practices are questionable...Plus, he never EVER has won the big game.

Quit being in denial. It was time for Huggins to go! This guy sends a bad message to youngsters.

Cincinnati hates change! But get over it already! Get a life!

It looks like Huggins will now win the "big game" for Kansas State not UC.

You are right, it is time to move one, but one can always wonder how things would have been, but we'll be able to follow it very nicely with K-State since they will end up with the recruits UC was going to get.

Regarding the DUI, I guess you don't believe in second chances, it was 2 year since he got over, he had addressed that issue and was doing everything else the President asked of him.

I guess now we should ask ourselves do we give NZ a second chance.

If we apply her criteria, the answer is no.

Nancy GET OUT AND GET OUT NOW!!!!!!

See, this is the kind of nonsense bs that makes me sick. I'm proud of X's program, and I wouldn't trade it in for anything. It's fun to watch, even if they are in the Atlantic 10. I take high offense to anyone, ANYONE, trashing my degree. I did not ONCE trash a degree from UC. This senseless immaturity shows what kind of person you are. There are plenty of great UC fans out there, but it's the vocal minority that really ruins it for the rest. Our football program was discontinued because of its high cost. Any of you geniuses know it's a lot tougher for a small private school to run a football program, especially when not getting government funding.

I don't think there is an over/under to your perverted question.

However, I would venture a guess that incoming freshmen males are seventeen times more likely to develop a "special relationship," with one of the Jesuit priests than your over/under scenario.

Was your degree really trashed or was it merely pointed out that it was from an "artsy fartsy" school.

I still don't understand the connection between Huggins and a Xavier degree.

Based upon the way he refused to shake the hand of your prior coach, I don't think Bob cares much one way or another about Xavier.

Less now that he's at K-State.

Huggins needed to be shown the door, and was. He didn't have the class to leave on his own terms. Instead, Huggins forced the issue and got canned. Get over it. Buy a purple sweater and cheer for KSU. Or Ole Miss. But get over it. It's time to move on and assume your position as the bottom-feeders of the Big East. And leave that NIT logo painted on the floor of 5/3 Arena - you'll need it next season.

Symptoms of HDS include denial of reality, a tendency to see things in hues of purple, a propensity for cheap beer, puking on expensive foreign cars, excessive flop sweating, and the complete inability to accept change.

If you know someone with HDS, approach with caution. The world that they live in is not our own. The symptoms of HDS may be treated with medication - like Herpes or Hepatitis B. Sadly, HDS itself is likely never to be eliminated.

Can you Huggins bashers give him a break for once. I don't recall him hitting any of his players. Sure he got in their face when they did something wrong, but isn't that was he's suppost to do as a coach?? He must of did something right if former players are keeping in contact with him and doing different charity events with him....

As for his DUI, I believe that he got a good licking from his Dad, June (his wife), and his girls Jenna and Jackie. He was all over the national sports channel as well as the local news channel (It doesn't matter what state you were in, I recall seeing it on a local news channel in TN on my way home from vacation.). He also was made a poster boy when he made his appearance in court in Fairfax, which should have never happend.

He KNOWS that when he is in public that people are going to be watching what he drinks for now on.

He has done alot of good for different organizations here, and I hope he continues to do so. If he can't, then I hope that Jenna and Jackie will carry on with what he has done with the organizations until he retires and moves back here.

Best of luck at Kansas State, Bob! Hope that Direct TV has ESPN U so I can watch the games in the fall.

Based upon published reports today, Huggs is filling up his coaching ranks and is on track to get another top 5 player.

If only we had a president who left him alone to work his magic here again.

We would also have had a 15th straight NCAA appearance.

Look's like we have a good coach to start us on track to get another 14 straight NCAA appearances.

Huggins and AK were met by about 300-400 faithful to hear them the last time on the radio.

AK gave some great insights on the problems he had with the administration. Lack of solidarity (teamwork), he couldn't count on them to back him.

They punished him for being loyal to Huggins. It seems Huggins and AK were more loyal to UC than our so-called president and Board of Trustees.

Huggins will always be welcome back on the campus by the students and the fans. In ten years he'll still be coming back and be warmly received. After Nancy is forced out she will never set one foot on the campus, and the university will be better off as a result.

I hope she goes on to another job (hopefully not at Kansas State or Ole Miss), that would be "true hell" for either of our past coaches.

FOR 5:58 & 5:46 anonymous poster AKA the Catholic-hating moron:

Why don't you run your lame anti-Catholic jokes by Mick Cronin at his next coach's show? I'm sure Mick, a LaSalle High School graduate, would love to hear them.
You may consider yourself a UC fan - or a Huggins fan, but I'd be willing to bet you never actually attended UC. Or any other university. It's possible that you have your GED, though even that is highly unlikely given your room temperature IQ.

Breaking news: Mick Cronin...UC's new head coach...is Catholic.
Catholics attend not only Xavier but UC, Miami, NKU, MSJ, Thomas More, and Cincinnati State. A good percentage of UC fans who have posted on this blog...are Catholic.

I've wasted enough time on one of life's losers like you. Next time you want to post another bigoted comment, have the stones to use your real name & e-mail address. Otherwise, you'll just confirm the fact that you are a spineless coward hiding behind the anonymity of your computer monitor. Go crawl back underneath whatever rock you call home.

Touchy, touchy, touchy,

One wonders why all the anger? Well Mike, I suggest you go hug your closest priest, I'm sure it won't be the first time.

Enjoy the moment.

To the elitist XU fan who posted, "Xavier's sterling reputation will never be tarnished because XU would never hire someone like Bob Huggins as coach".
No, XU maintains a sterling reputation because when their players get in trouble it's kept hush-hush by the university community, with a mantra of "We're private and don't release details of player activity/player discipline", allowing XU to skate under the radar of public scrutiny. Try a former XU player who went to the NBA, who had a secret bank account for XU players; try another XU player who was caught at a Norwood Hardware Store stealing several telephone answering machines with the help of his girlfriend at the cash register. XU is as dirty as everyone else, they just don't have to hang out their dirty laundry, like everyone else.

By the way....your little "zinger" about words being used on XU's website that UC graduates
"wouldn't understand" - That's just another example of the "Holier than thou" and "We're better than you because we're taught by Jesuits", ad nauseum cocky, self-serving, arrogant, patronizing little dweeb mentality that is churned out on Ledgewood Avenue. By the way, I AM Catholic and don't like when someone uses their religion to debase, ridicule or demean others who are not. When someone criticizes XU maybe they have a legitmate point - it's not necessarily anti-Catholic.

Bob Huggins did what the Athletic Director wanted him to do - (1) Gave inner city kids a chance who might otherwise not get one; (2) Built a winning program. I am sure XU community feels the first goal is very worthy...although...I don't remember XU getting any kids from the inner city and helping them like UC has done. What a bunch of hypocrites...
