Never Enough Brian Kelly

No more media-savvy coach exists... I thought Pitino was good, he's Triple A compared to this guy, who yesterday asked me if I'd gotten Springsteen tickets yet. Never mind that he recalled a conversation we'd had several months ago about The Boss, or that unlike most big-time college and NFL coaches he'd escaped the film-room cocoon long enough even to know Bruce was touring. He took the time to mention it to me, unsolicited. That doesnt sound like a big deal; it is. It is. He also chided UC PR guy Kelby Siler about a mention in this week's media game notes of "If UC Loses'' to San Diego State. "We don't mention negative stuff in press releases'' Kelly said, or some such.

Memo to Marvin: I'll broker a meeting w/you and BK, on the way to deal with the press.

Also: Sincere apologies to Rick Minter for my mistake in this AM's column. I knew Minter coached the Humanitarian Bowl, not Tim Murphy... was in a hurry, mind was on something John Arena had said about Murphy. Rick, I owe you a beer. Keystone Light?

Kelly is the most interesting coach in Cincy now or in recent memory.

He seems to be the real deal - an outstanding FB coach, media savy, and willing to let us know he can converse about a lot more than FB.

Hope Kelly and the Bearcats get to a BCS bowl game.

Doc - you and other sports writers gotta love him.

Need to get that article ready giving credit where credit's due, to Mike Thomas.

Now just need to get Doc to love UC Football, oh and check his media guide.

What would you say if I told you Demetrius Jones was on UC's campus today?

at 3:23 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't get too attached, Paul.

BK could be coaching somewhere else as soon as next year if UC keeps winning. There are $2mill per year jobs in the college ranks potentially on the horizon for him if UC should finish as high as second in the Big East.

Didn't you say BK's favorite Stones song was "Waiting on a Friend"? If you ever get an opening, ask Marvin that question. Probable answer >> "I probably should have one but let's just leave it at that". Or "What are the Stones?"
Yeah, not relevant but winning is & Marvin doesn't.

Absolutely hilarious. As I sat in the stadium last Sat., and saw people watching from CCM, I too thought I had now seen it all. We used to watch from the dorms so no one would know we were watching.

with all due respect, BK is a ways away from making $2mil per year.

Tressel doesn't make much more than $2mil per.

Tressel makes 2.6 mill \/yr

They've got to find a way to get him more money QUICK. He seems like the anti-Saban but how could he turn down a million plus raise to go elsewhere??

Second the thought about Mike Thomas. Hated to see Andy Kennedy "twist in the wind", but Mike's got to get credit for Cronin & Kelly & that deserves a raise as well.

Per this AM's paper, BK only ambitions are to coach "at the next level."

So, we could loose him at UC and still have him in town...

hmmmmmmmmm

Wasn't it just a little over two months ago that Kelly was labeled a whiner for calling out the media for not going to Rhode Island?

Now he's a media genius.....

at 1:54 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

hey thats great he treated one press guy well in asking about bruce tix, but in doing so was somewhat rude to another media member who he was in an interview with at the time. a member who is around the team more than you are and deserves a little more respect than was shown. by the way it wasnt me that im talking about

Paul, everything you say has merit until you start talking about beer.

Congrats Paul, you look to be the only Enquirer-Post Blogmeister without a beer belly although you like Keystone.

Actually, I think you have to give credit to former AD Bob Goin. The man was a visionary. Varsity Village was his brain child. It was always said that one of the biggest reasons UC was running fast to no where was because they didn't have the facilities to compete. Now UC has world class facilities that are on par or better than some of the biggest schools in the country. He also orchestrated the Big East move. No one can deny the role that has played for UC footbal. On top of all of that, he was one of football's biggest supporters in the UC athletic community. He never looked at football as a second class citizen to Basketball. I do applaud though Mike Thomas for keeping the ball rolling in the right direction.

Anon 1:54, so what if he snubbed Bill Koch? Get over it....

Paul:
Didn't Keystone come in second in a national taste test? You obviously have good taste...Granted, urine came in first that year, but hey...second is second. Try Natural Light...good, cheap beer...Kidding aside, Consumer Reports a couple years back listed it as one of the best tasting beers for the buck...i got hooked.

Hey 1:48pm...
"Need to get that article ready giving credit where credit's due, to Mike Thomas."

Please....

Mike Thomas may have hired Kelly, but it's not like he's a ventriloquist, controlling Kelly's actions and when he speaks. Kelly is his own man. I imagine that if Kelly ever felt Thomas wasn't backing the FB program in a way he expects, heds let him know about it, a la Bob Huggins back in the day.

Give Thomas for hiring Kelly. Gve Kelly credit for being Kelly.

Memo to Doc from Marvin:
You're not smart enogh to understand a conversation between me and anyone else, regarding football.

at 2:17 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yo, PD.

Make yourself famous and help Brian Kelly in one fell swoop.

Insist that Colerain High School be admitted to the GCL.

It just might be the best public school in America, and the GCL is clearly the best league in America. Get all those kids in one place so BK can get a good look at them when they're freshmen.

It's not like they're praying between those Goal Posts, ya know. And, after all, shouldn't the Church be reaching out to the Public? (Or something like that.)

"Never happen," you say.

Like Forrest Gump would say, "Stupid is as stupid does." (Or was that, "Life is like a box of chocolates?"

Strange that a football team's coverage in the local press is so dependent on the coach's "media avviness," i.e., willingness to pander to / stroke the egos of partially maladjusted media types (I actually leave doc out of that -- some of his colleagues, or, say, Lance are a different story), but I guess that's just the way it is.

Doc, I've got Keystone Lights in the garage but please tell us that you'll drink something else when you hit your 2nd million?!
Molson Ice?

While I have all the respect in the world for beer discussions, back to sports talk.

An interesting rumor about Kelly has been passed to me. Rumor has it he may be gone for Michigan as soon as next season.

I don't know that he should be given much props yet past his personality since the 'Cats have won just 5 games under his tutelage. I know it's exciting as hell for success in the football program to finally arrive. however, Kelly would probably be a good fit at Michigan. It would be a shame to see such a savvy personality, something Cincinnati has not seen in a coach for a long while, leave the Queen City no matter the success (or lackthereof) of the Bearcats.

I hope the guy was kidding about Colerain being one of the best public high schools in America. Why, because of football? Too bad they can't pass a levy.

Kelly annoys the heck out of me. He berates his players on the sidelines even when they are up by 20 or more points. He never looks like he is enjoying the game. He speaks before thinking and is only here til the next "deal I can't turn down" comes along.

Dude its football. You really strike me as someone who never played the game.
Perhaps he should hug everyone a little more.

Doc, sometimes I wonder why you allow some of this stuff (you have the discretion, right?)

Then, it occurs >> you just enjoy them (Aaron, 9:23, etc) making fools of themselves. Yeah, I get it.

Thomas took a mostly undeserved whipping when he first got here. Now anything good that happens is (still) Bob Goin's doing?

Internally that department was a mess on Goin's watch. But the guy was absolute gold when it came to the conference upgrade and getting VV built.

Overall, though, I believe Thomas was an upgrade in that position, as do many others I know. He seems to have hired great young professionals in fundraising and marketing, and obviously in coaching.
