it, like, drives me crazy

What is it with sub-30 somethings and their use of the word "like''? I'm in a cafe in Baltimore this morning and, like, this, like 20-something guy is, like, like-ing his way through an entire conversation w/another, like, 20-something. Don't they teach proper English in school anymore? This form of expression was around 30 years ago when I was in high school. But it wasn't epidemic the way it is now. This guy literally couldnt go three words w/o tossing in a like-bomb. After, like, 10 minutes, I started saying "like'' every time he did. It was all anyone could do to get in a decent "you know''. He got up and left the place, mad at me. Hey, like, sue me. You know?

no kidding. that drives me crazy. i'm 21 and i think it's awful when people talk like that. it's not necessary, and i don't know how people develop the habit of using that word so frequently.

couldn't agree more Doc... it's like, taken off over the last decade. watch a reality show (actually, this idea will like, torture you), with a really like young cast (the Bachelor, Laguna Beach on MTV), and use your closed-captioning feature on your remote. actually, seeing how many times they use the word "like" - pop up on the screen in the sub-text, will almost make it like, hilariously entertaining.

My wife and I had a similar experience at The Cheesecake Factory in Kenwood several weeks ago.

Four college age girls were seated next to us while we were eating and one of them used "Like" nearly every couple of words.

When we left, I said, loudly and in front of their table, "Like, I gotta get out of here".

Paul:

I'm not so opposed to this popular verbal affliction--I'd be worried if they don't grow out of it by the time they become adults, but to be fair:

I used to use the word "psyche!" all the time..

I used to call people "zekes"

I used to make fun of people wearing "buddies"

I used to comment on people getting "burned"

I used to refer to someone as being "mental"

I'm certain "my gang" was quite annoying at that time, but, fortunately, we grew out of it. I'm certain today's young folks will grow out of this as well. If they don't, they're all zekes! Phyche!

Well said Paul. Some vocabularies consist mainly of four basic often repeated words or phrases: "like", "you know",
"know what I'm saying?" and "I mean". Just check out the talk shows. Know what Im saying?

Like, you are totally right.

Agree with Doc. The "like" epidemic includes at least three others: They are: "you know", "I mean" and "know what I'm saying?" Each is very annoying when repeated constantly and is ruinous to a lot of talk shows. Know what I'm saying?

Everyone is being PC...maybe that's why democrats kicked temporary butt last night...a PC constituency!

The "like" thing is in both black and white vernaculars. However, the "...know what I'm saying?" and "...you know..." is almost exculsively black talk. I don't know why, just is. Is it really too "dangerous" to point that out for the posters who've referred to it? It's not a bad thing, but it IS a black-vernacular thing, and to omit that fact is...curious, to say the least...What think ya'll?

How do I like combat the unknowing addiction to using the word like with my daughters and her friends? I refuse to answer or comment on anything they've asked or said if they use like in the wrong context. You'd be surprised on how they clean things up and how much less my daughters like use like in the wrong like way.

Like live big.

my 28 year old son - gets on the phone with one of his friends and every other word is --- dude. Every "dude" is slowly killing me.

Why has no Cincinnati writer written the true reason the crowds are down at UC athletic events: The reason - is the President of the University. People are not so angry - at the firing of Bob Huggins but how it was done. NO reason was ever given - so everyone of us who has felt the injustice of management feels angry because that is all we can assume. The people are angry and embrassed that our University that represents the city of Cincinnati has treated someone who was probably the most responsible for getting us into the Big East and brought pride back to the University and to the city of Cincinnati was so badly treated. If you want a quick soluation to the anger - fire the President, thank Bob Huggins and the ex Athletic Director Bob Goin for their work and contribution the the University and take the sting out of the embrassment and shame we all feel - who support the University of Cincinnati. Or give us a reason we can understand. It comes off as arrogence to say nothing. While you are at it - fire all the board members behind the scene who voted for it and still have said nothing. I am a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and I am ashamed of the way this has been handled. Dantonio and Cronin are good people - they deserve better boss's. I wonder if they teach ethics in business at the University anymore

I agree completely !!!

Doc, you could not have said it better along with all
the other commentary...

Here's one that gets on my nerves: Whenever TV people are talking back and forth, they always have to thank each other (a bit too much, in my opinion) with "Thank you so much" Its as if they are getting paid some big $$$ ! Also, sometimes they are talking so fast you cannot understand them.

Understood. Also when you get older you'll forget how to spell if you kneew in the first place.

But - Don't you just hate it when you notice that copy editors no longer seem to really copy edit? Instead they seem to edit by spell check. Recon their pressed four thyme.

Paul, I think we are twin sons with different mothers, I always seem to agree with you. The immaturity of the younger set has annoyed me for years. If it's not "like" it's "dude" and with the girls it's "really"
or "whatever". I think that with guys it started in about 1973, when the military draft ended. Up until then all silliness stopped with the military hitch, it was "grow up" time. Now, the 20 somethings still talk "high school" and still live at home. They never seem to grow up.
