3-dot lounge welcomes lou piniella

Congrats to Sweet Lou, who just torpedoed further his managerial legacy by taking a job w/the Cubs, 3 years, $10 million. Piniella wanted the Yankees job, it says here, because he believes his ticket to the Hall of Fame will be punched because of his managing... so he goes to the Cubs? It only means 1 thing: When they tell you it's not about the money, it's about the money... Bengals couldnt have picked a worse week to lose Levi... Peppers and Rucker are the best bookend DEs in the league... Palmer will be running and ducking unless Rudi makes like Jim Brown...

Got a call from my best friend today... he lives in Tucson, I see him once every few years... nothing reminds you about the power of friendship than an out-of-the-blue call from someone you can tell anything to... loners are not loners by choice...

We know Mick Cronin can recruit... we're about to learn if he can coach...

Am I the only one wanting Chad Johnson to be as audacious as he has been in previous years? 85 has been Marvin-ized... it has taken some of his spunk and, I think, some of the offense's swagger along with it... give me brash Chad any day, over "mature'' Chad... BTW, Sports Illustrated is running a big feature on him in the next few weeks...

Another reason to love Bob Castellini: Back in about May, I wrote that the Reds had .500 talent and that the best thing about baseball is, over a 6-month season, teams almost always wear they face they deserve at the end of 162 games... the owner sent me a note, proposing a bet: They finish above .500, I owe him 2 pints of Graeters... below .500, he owes me... last week, 6 pints of Graeter's coffee ice cream arrived at my door, express-sent in dry ice, in a styrofoam box... I hate it when I'm right.

Live big, with raspberry chip.

First off, probably like a lot of Reds fans, I was hoping Castellini would reign in Sweet Lou for the Redlegs. Narron seems like a nice guy and all, but a little fire in the clubhouse would be nice. How many times can you watch the big donkey strike out before you offer him a child's bat. You know, the ones with the barrels that are a gazillion times larger than the handles.

Levi is a big loss, and I'm glad it appears to be shorter than longer. I also believe that we are all about to find out how good Mr. Whitworth really is. Yes, we will all be calling him "Mr." after the game on Sunday. Big guy, big school, bigger competition for 22 straight without a sack. Did Simeon Rice play in the second half?

Calls out-of-the-blue are the genius behind guys and their friendships. As simple as cracking open a cold one while catching the Redlegs on radio. It's what allows us to be lifelong friends.

If you looked up 85 in Webster's, I'm betting swagger would be one of the first words used to define. While I would be the first one to agree that CJ needs to remain positive during the lean days, I would also promote that Chad needs to do his thing. It's what makes him Chad. Chad minus his mojo is like a CORvette, with a CHEvette engine. It'll start up, but the ride's not worth it.

Try some black cherry some time, if you haven't already. Graeters is like your boy in Tuscon. The best, for life.

Live big

As one of the FEW president Zimpher supporters...I don't care if Mr. Cronin can coach or not. I just want him to recruit players who can graduate from college. Winning games is for the alumni and the sportswriters.

We've seen what happens when you put winning first--corruption, national embarrasment, and the denigration of the school. Kansas State should be ashamed for what they have done. Mr. Huggins has no right to be coaching at the college level. If he belongs anywhere, it's probably state prison. He was nothing but an embarrasment to the city and the school.

The most important lesson a young man can learn from college athletics is to put forth your best effort in all venues--academic and athletic.

Winning the game is not nearly as important as doing your best in any endeavor. You may lose some games, but the benefit to your character far outweighs what some "sportsfan" thinks of your record.

Graduate those players Mick! I'll be plenty pleased with that. "Wins" are for the short-sighted.

Gee, didn't realize that MR. Zimpher was a fan of the blog....

Better get the condo cleaned up before she comes home. She wasn't wearing her fishnets at the press conference yeterday. She must be cross with you..

Paul,
Nice thought re: bringing back Chad's swagger but the problem is he'll come across as being fake if he starts up with the trash talk now. The offense isn't clicking like it did in '05 and unless Chad can back up his mouth with his gametime performance he'd be a fool to get brash now. The worst thing he can do is run his mouth and say things that he doesn't really believe. Then his credibility would be shot & he wouldn't get that back any time soon.

"MR Zimpfer": I guess you think your "wife" is the only one who cares about graduating players. Refresh my memory here - what was her graduation rate at that university in Wisconsin? And just judging by attire, I would not show much support for a university president who dresses like a prostitute on page A1 of the Enquirer like she did some time ago. But hey - it's your choice.

11:11 Anonymous - I want players that graduate, too. But I believe winning is important as well.

It's good for the student community and can be a source of pride for the university. And winning = more fans, more attendance, more tv appearances, and more tournament $$$$ - better for everyone.

I wish someone would dig up some dirt on Castellini....I'm begininng to think he is the Second Coming...

Paging Ken Blackwell...

Graduating players would be great if big-time college basketball were really full of "student" atheletes. Unfortunately, it is not. Most competitive teams are made up of guys who have no business in college. UC is NOT Duke. Besides, Cincinnati's grad rates were not all that bad. The criteria are suspect. Grad rates are bull. Huggins turned a few thugs into solid citizens and others remained thugs. I don't want a social-worker. I want to follow a competitive team - and that requires a coach. Maybe Cronin is a miracle worker...

Paul,

So Andy Furman was suspended for saying bad things about TJ? Have you ever been in trouble for saying something bad about someone in an article?

re suspension: Nope. Never gotten that personal. Even if I had, thats why we have editors. Papers are a little more responsible than talk radio.
