embarrassing

It's beyond foolish, what happened to Odell Thurman early Monday morning. As for Chris Henry, what's he even doing in the Escalade? I'll write for Tuesday's paper on this, after listening this afternoon to Marvin Lewis and talking to other players. The obvious: The bengals can't cut these two. They can sit Henry. The pair are mocking their head coach. They're embarrassing the team, the city and themselves. Enough. It's funny how a coach can expect so much discipline on the field and tolerate so little off it.

Sure is. I logged on this morning to read coverage of a great win yesterday, and their on the front page (WWW) is the story about Thurman! If he wants to model himself after Ray Lewis, he needs to think about how Lewis seems to have turned it around off the field too.

Not playing the ACLU defense attorney role for Chris Henry.... But, WHY should he have to sit out this Sunday's game vs. New England??? Curious what your logic is w/ that? It's not like he violated a city-wide curfew for grown men, nor was he an accessory to a crime.... I can't sit on a pulpit and say that when I was in my 20's - I never found myself riding shotgun w/ a buddy who had too much to drink, as we made our way home from a watering hole.

While Thurmond was the only one cited, I believe Henry is under orders (from his parole in Florida) not to be drinking. If he violates his parole, he can go to jail for 15 months.

as far as Henry was concerned, at least he wasn't driving. it's still legal to go out and get drunk. however, given his track record, if this pattern of behavior continues, it's only a matter of time...

what's troubling to me, is that it seems the turds are all attracted to each other on this team. I wouldn't be surprised if Frostee Rucker and AJ Nicholson were in the car, too.

Its difficult to understand how Odell's team mates, who are supposed to be there for him, would encourage his continued substance abuse.

YOU would think they would be smart enough to get a limo thye sure as hell have the $$$$$$$$

What a joke. And an embarassment. Marvin is making Huggins look good.

Anon 1:45 makes a good point. But I saw Henry on the one of the local stations last night (Part of "Chad's corner) being "interviewed" by Chad and he couldn't even speak in coherent sentences (I'm assuming this was before any drinking). These are not intellectual giants we are dealing with.

The suspension would be not for violating any law but for being an idiot for putting himself in the position he was in. Did TO violate any laws when the Eagles benched him? It is a matter of principle for Marv.

Question: What would Chris Henry had done if he scored 3 touchdowns?

So nice to be 3-0, come off a great win over a hated rival, and have something to really be excited about after 15 yrs of Bengal-hell.....only to have these losers muck it all up and overshadow all the good. Is it really worth having thugs like this on the team, Marvin?

How could anyone be surprised by talented athletes with a healthy sense of entitlement doing something REALLY STUPID?

And for folks who chalk this up to youthful indiscretions. how many game checks do you have to lose before a player sees the light. It doesn't seem that either Henry or Thurman are interested in reforming their behavior. Which forget about football for a second, doesn't bode well for them as people past the age of about 27. Perhaps I'm rushing to judgement but those two appear close to squandering their future.

Marvin previously had a murderer heading up his defense in Baltimore. This is nothing compared to that. He doesn't care....as long as they're producing on the field, it's all good.

If you guys knew how many professional athletes drink and drive you would be amazed...As a matter of fact if you breathalized most individuals on the weekend you would probably find that more than 60% of drivers could blow a .10 and barely feel intoxicated. I think the real problem is that people assume that a .10 is hard to blow when it may only take a few drinks. I wish these guys would make better decisions. They have several options to make sure they get home safely... girl groupies...guy groupies.. friends...one night stands....the cousin who lives with the player who has no job except to pick up the laundry, chaffeur to the games and cook on occasion.... yes.. yes.. plenty of options...To expect the guys to not drink and get rowdy is unrealistic....Who doesn't party?...Driving under the influence is a definite no no!

Wish they'd have called me..I'd have given them a ride! Hmmm wonder how far down this rode we'll go with the young, rich and (in)famous (at least locally). Can anyone say "Stanley Wilson"!!! Whom I hold responsible for our Super Bowl loss by the way. Sure Krumrie's breaking a leg took what what was left out of the proverbial sails, but big Stanley's addiction caused the bricks to come down. A whole game plan shot to hell because of one mans selfishness over his team mates (and a city who idolized them). Good God you guy's have been blessed with physical gifts I can't even comprehend. Accolades, priveledge, money (yes, at least enough for a ride) and the affection of thousands of fans. What's your malfunction? I doubt it's depression and low self-esteem but if it is I'm know your provided health care that millions don't to help you out!

this is about odell thurman, not chris henry. not only do we not know for certain that henry was even in the vehicle, we don't know for certain that he was drunk (just because odell thurman says the others in the truck had been drinking doesn't mean a lot. folks say a lot of things when being questioned by the police (like odell saying he'd only had a "few beers" and then blowing a .17 in the breathalyzer).

also, until there is actual proof that henry is prohibited from drinking as part of his probation (it's not parole, and yes, there's a difference), then get off his back. it wasn't even his car, and -- if he had been drinking -- at least he was not driving. now if team rules prohibit drinking during the season, and it's true that he was, then go ahead and discipline him there . . . .

the only source of this being a probation violation is some other anonymous poster at 9:45 am (saying it was a condition of his "parole" in florida). considering his florida conviction was for a concealed weapon, it is HIGHLY unlikely that he would be prohibited from drinking alcohol as a condition of probation in that case.

good lord folks,

RAY LEWIS WAS ACQUITTED AT TRIAL. he is not a murderer. that's why there are courts to test the truth of criminal charges! so get off marvin's back about some of this.

at least he has some respect for our legal system and the rights of his players. for example, did anyone notice that one of the main witnesses in chris henry's outstanding case re alcohol to minors was also indicted for murder and found incredible by police when she falsely charged henry of sexual assault ?

innocent until proven guilty folks (although i admit odell does not appear to have much of a chance here).

"Thurman was released to a sober driver"

Who was the sober driver?

at 8:27 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Paul,

Why is it obvious that the Bengals can't cut these two?????

at 8:31 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The problem is that on the other side of the crossed yellow line is my family's car, your child's car, or anyone important to someone.

In the drunk driver's car were "important" members of our community who's character has already been established by association.

Could've been a lot worse - I sure hope they win a Super Bowl before these wealthy men kill someone and get sent to probation "hell".

Bengal Stripes = prison stripes and that's YOUR team. Go team.

Stop the world - I want to get off.

First thing. Completely disappointing. That goes for Thurman, Henry, McNeal, and the fans posting on this blog. While I'm sure many of us have been too impaired to drive before, that doesn't make it ok. Who said driving drunk has to be a rite of passage? These guys aren't entitled to playing football. For those who said it isn't illegal to get drunk...it is if you are Chris Henry. Part of his probation requires that he not consume alcohol. Why is Thurman driving McNeal's car? He was probably the least tanked. I don't expect the players on the team I root for to be angels, but I do expect them to follow laws. It disappoints me that as fans we don't see that as a prerequisite.

Okay, we're young, we're sports hero's, we're paid outrageous sums of money for playing football, we love to party and have fun....what are our choices????

A) Grow up real fast and don't party.
B) Hire a really hot chick to drive us around in a limo, or maybe 2 really hot chicks
C) Get arressted for DUI, lose our sport's hero status, lose our money, lose our fun....

hmmmm...what should we do...

Maybe the NFL players commission can provide an on call Limo service for each team....when the need to party arises....

Shame about Thurman, but we'll move on. Forget Henry, he was going to be suspended soon anyways. McNeal will get another chance to turn it around - his choice what to do though. We're hurting at linebacker, but wide receiver we'll be OK - TJ is back, and besides it's time the Bengals give Kelly Washington the opportunity he deserves - to be the set third receiver. He works hard and doesn't complain (out loud anyways) about his role as a part timer, nor about wanting to be traded - despite the fact that a lot of teams out there would take him in a heartbeat. He's a great option for Carson when CJ & TJ are practically covered by lasers!

Great column today Doc!

at 8:49 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Doc do you have any insight about whether the player/leaders on the team are trying to address these issues with the knuckleheads who keep screwing up? It seems so much of football is relying on the guy next to you to do his job. I would think the guys on the team who are focused on a championship would be schooling these guys about accountability to their teammates. Not just the two guys in the car either. They should also include the jerks who called their teammate with a substance abuse problem to come out and party with them.

Although I am not especially a fan of Ray Lewis, I do believe he is a fine human being who treats the people in his life with genuine affection (his mother, teammates, etc.).
There is a fair amount of misinformation circulating in the comments about Lewis.
Ray Lewis never was tried for murder. To call Lewis a murderer is flat out ignorant. While an Atlanta GA grand jury once indicted him for murder, the prosecutor in the case dismissed the charge with the altogether unusual statement that he, the prosecutor, was convinced of Lewis's innocence. Lewis pled to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction, meaning that he essentially flipped off the Atlanta police who were investigating the fatal stabbing.

Lewis, like his teammate Jamal, made an extremely poor choice of his associates and paid for it dearly.

What makes the Atlanta prosecutor's statement astonishing is that it is altogether unlike anything I've ever heard at a plea hearing.

In Odell Thurman's case are all the elements of human tragedy. Both his parents died young and Odell has younger siblings counting on him. They are the real victims here, not us sports fans.

I don't agree that Henry should be benched. Throwing up out a car window isn't illegal. Yeah, he's had all the other problems, but he didn't get arrested this time. Everyone goes out and gets drunk, and plenty of them drive after. I'm not condoning it, but it can happen to anyone.

desmith:

It is MY business and everyone else's business when anyone, football player or Joe Schmo, gets behind the wheel of a car drunk and puts the lives of MY family and MY friends and MY fellow human beings in jeopardy. It just so happens that football players receive a lot more publicity than Joe Schmo. Sorry, it comes with the profession. One of the downsides to making millions of dollars. If there was a blog about Joe Schmo blowing a 0.17 last weekend, you better believe I'd be on that one too and you better believe I'd be ticked off, just like I am now. It is my business and this community's business when people make choices that put the lives of others in peril.

Desiring for people to follow the laws that are in place to protect others is not "pushing moral standards" on others, it's freakin' common sense man.

Chris Henry did NOTHING wrong. In fact, he did something right. He had a designated driver. It's not his fault Odell drank to much.

Chris Henry is a man in his early 20s who just celebrated a successful day at work by drinking too much. Shocking. NOT at all!

Henry did NOTHING wrong and to sit him would be foolish.

Doc has let emotion overcome common sense on this one.
