3-dot lounge, steroid edition

Mark Dantonio might be the world's most honorable guy, the best, most decent human being since Gandhi, but in the end, he's still a football coach. The minute he walked out of his UC office, he forgot about UC entirely. Anything less would be a distraction to his recruiting at MSU... Cris Collinsworth says everyone associated with the Broncos thinks the kid QB Jay Cutler is the Next Elway...seriously... everyone on the team wondered what took Mike Shanahan so long to switch from Jake Plummer. This is relevant locally only if you believe the Broncos are the Bengals chief competition for the second wildcard spot. Which I do...

I got a kick outta Frank Robinson dumping on Mark McGwire in our newspaper last week. In fact, I get a cynical jolt from all the old stars sniping at the supposed steroid geeks... does the word "greenie'' mean anything to anyone? Does anyone not believe that the players of Robinson's era gobbled amphetamines like Pez, especially on Sunday mornings after Saturday nights? C'mon, Frank...

You can watch the game tonight on Channel 5... in Dayton, those w/o the NFL Network have to go to a bar. But the fan outcry was not what the almighty league expected after last Thursday's game between the chiefs and the broncos. The NFL Network has 41 million subscribers, less than a third of all cable households. As long as the local stations agree to buy the rights -- which seems likely, given the demand and the ad rates they can charge -- there might not be the groundswell of grumbling the league hopes...

Bengals 24, Ravens 21...live big, Carson to Chad

Living up here in Dayton, I really wanted to see the game. But I decided to just stay in and listen on the radio.

It reminded me of listening to Marty and Joe on the radio during the summers.

It was kind of nice to listen to Brad and Dave Lapham and just enjoy the game on the radio.

The bars and restaurants up here were packed, but I agree with you Paul. I don't think the outcry is going to be what the NFL thought it would be.

It's ridiculous that they are putting thes games on the NFL Network. Why does the NFL want to put more games on cable anyway? While most people have cable, you're still cutting out a certain portion of people who don't have it.

And while I love Chris Collinsworth, I hear that Bryant Gumble is the play by play guy? The NFL Network is a disaster!

White Death hasn't arrived (yet).
Channel 5 didn't have to cover the screen with watches, warnings, radar images, school closings, highway gas can bombs and amber alerts, so we got to see the game.
And the Bengals are an unflagged offensive pass interference away from two shutouts in a row.

NOW THAT'S LIVIN' BIG.

One thing I have always wondered about the "old timers" in baseball is what they would do had they been playing in today's steroids era. I think it is very easy for everyone to get up on their ivory tower and preach about the sanctity of baseball and Bonds and McGwire's records are tainted. If some of the best players in today's era allegedly took steroids, is it really that far fetched to imagine some of the best players from yesterday would do the same thing if given the opportunity. And I can't say that if steroids meant the difference between life in the minors or a career in MLB, or from a bench player to a starter, or from a solid player to an all star, or from an all star to an all time great, that I wouldn't necessarily take the chance and shoot up.

re: your column on Chris (sp?)Collinsworth. Listening to him last night was such a pleasure. Thoughtful, articulate, funny, intelligent and knowledgeable. Our entire family REALLY ENJOYED the game that much more because of his announcing skills. Never got the impression he was talking "at" us, but "to" us. What a pleasure! Thanks Chris!

Thank you, Paul!! Someone finally has the cajones to mention the word greenies in print about these sanctimonious, holier-than-thou players of the past. Oh, Hank Aaron is beyond reproach! He hit his homeruns clean! Everyone knows that amphetimine usage was rampant in his era. We want to think the Hammer was clean, but we have no idea. A money-grubbing lowlife named Canseco comes out and points fingers at every modern slugger and everyone is guilty. Do I think McGwire took 'roids? Yeah, probably. Problem is there's no proof he did. I think if any BBWAA member does not vote for his induction, their voting privilages should be stripped. Won't happen, but would be nice to see.
