in over his head?

When you're a university athletic director and you hire a head-hunter this late in the game, to help you find a basketball coach, it suggests a few things: 1, your search isn't exactly going well; 2, you're not sure of yourself 3, you're not well connected...mike thomas says he needs a Dallas firm to conduct "background checks'' on prospective coaches, among other things... what is this, the CIA? Nope, at UC's level, the list of applicants should be fairly small... you shouldnt need any paid outside help... you should rely on your own contacts, your knowledge of your situation and whom you believe fits it best... if you need a stranger to help you w/any of that, something is wrong... even casual UC fans can give you 5 names... it's hard to know what thomas is thinking, given that he has chosen to limit his comments to canned statements released by the school... in the paper, i've given thomas and zim the benefit of the doubt throughout... thomas has the right to hire the new coach; zim had the right to part ways w/the old one... but what has occurred since is a big ol' HUH?... if they don't hire andy kennedy, or someone w/a proven track record as a d-1 head coach -- and give that someone a 7-year deal, minimum, given the situation -- they will have blown a great opportunity and proven the skeptics to be absolutely right... hiring a head-hunter is something you do early on, not now...

At this rate, Zim's long-term plan to take UC to DII status may come about sooner rather than later!

If UC doesn't give the job to Kennedy they better have a really big name lined up or they are going to be blasted into next year by the local and national media.

So Doc,

What's the word on the UC job? Are Paul Hewitt and Mike Montgomery still in the mix?

If Kevin Stallings is hired UC is banished to doormat status, he's never had a winning conference record in 8 seasons at Vandy.

Doc,

It seems quite clear that the UC administration is intent on removing all vestiges of the Huggins era regardless of the costs be they defined in terms of economics, reputation, or alumni support. Count me out on the last measure until the University leadership can exhibit the kind of character displayed by those they seem to look at with disdain, namely Andy Kennedy, his staff, and players.

Thomas's hiring a search firm on March 10th is a - cover your a__ move, he has been telling supporters, letter to UCATS, that he is working daily with all his contacts and he is not going to use a search firm - it is my guess he has had an agreement with this Beaudine from day one, in order to get the UC job, to use them for the BB search, and now that the search info is going to come out, he has to come out with a statement - to do background and reference checks, what has he been doing daily with all of his well connected professional contacts - and contract negotiations, that's his job and legal dept of UC, I bet Indiana is going to find a coach and then hire an ourside search firm to negotiate a contract, then again my guess is Mike has never negotiated a contract for more that $200,000 - this is nothing more that a COVER YOU A___ - this guy is not truthful

I had the opportunity to talk to Mike Thomas within the last month and he knows he has to get an excellent coach for the basketball program. He realizes it will be what defines him.

He is playing the selection process very close to his vest, but was aware of a couple of excellent coaches I mentioned to him who should be included on the short list. He knew who they were, but was uncommittal about anyone on the list.

I think he is a quiet guy, but lets hope he steps up to the plate with a good hire who can both recruit and coach big time.

I am hoping for Mickey Cronin. He has proven that he can recruit big time and coach big time. He was the best assistant coach Huggins had, knows how to coach, knows how to win. He recruited the best rated All Americans UC recruited in the 90's and they did not get into trouble.

He is a Cincinnati alumni and should be a lead candidate for the position. If we get him he will exceed Huggins record and since this is his dream job, we will have a long time successful coach.

I hope he stays away from some one year wonder and concentrates on someone who can recruit.
